I suspect it does have some kind of feature that lets it know where you go on the Internet, like smart ads. I won't say why I think this... only that I've noticed some ads on the bottom that I doubt the majority of AT sees.

Curious, isn't it? (Of course, it could just be me...)

No, they don't know what you post. Basically, the structure of each forum page allows for a banner to be loaded at a certain place from a certain company. That company that keeps the banners goes out and says to other companies "do you want to advertise on the web?" and they say yes. Then they get banners made for them and put into the server's random choosing catagory. Then, when you load an Anandtech page (or other webpages who use the same company to put advertisements on their site) the AT server says "okay, Mr. Advertisement Server, time to load a banner" and that server goes "okay, hmm.. I'll pick [some random banner]". Then, the rest of the page is constructed in your browser and that's what you see.

What you've described is random chance.

yeah, the bottom ads are 'smart' ads.

lets try some keywords or something:

canada, AMD, health, quit smoking, upgrade

didnt work.

Yup, just jump around various posts - and note the subject content. You'll see the ads are relevant to subject matter. Now, just how many posts within a thread are sampled to gather that data. That's the next question.

Not if you help support Anandtech like RossMAN and I do. We subscribe to the faster AT servers. We get 1000 PM limit, dedicated servers with NO advertisements, a buddy list (is that open to non subscribers now too?), and a promise of other cool stuff to come (which we've never seen).

I don't think forum speed is an issue anymore.

I basically subscribe because:

1) It's free (thanks to the savings in Hot Deals, ING Direct gave me $50 free :D )
2) No ads
3) 1,000 PM's
4) You're helping support a community you believe in

Less than a cup of coffee per month. :) $30 per year for the one-year contract. There are three differen't contracts: 3-months, 6-months, and 12-months. You can find more information here. It's a great investment! Cheap, reliable, and very VERY spoiled. :) It's nice to see an extremely fast forum connection (virtually instantaneous!) with no advertisements, a MUCH higher PM limit (you don't have to clean them out as often), and an overall more professional look to the forums. Plus, when you search, the Subscriber Forums allow full text searches -so no more of the hit-and-miss search.

Try it out. For a mere $12 for three months, even! Think about it... with the money that you save, $12 for three months is easily made up in the via ForSale/ForTrade and the HotDeals forums. Plus you're helping to keep Anandtech online. With the 1 year contract, you're paying $2.50 per month. That's virtually no down time. That's incredibly fast forums. Even when I was on dialup, I saw a change in speed. Granted, it was quite small, but still... if I can see a change on my dialup connection, think of what it would be like on a broadband connection. I have broadband now and the first time I subscribed (being at work on a T1), I sat there with wide eyes and mouth open. My buddy Andrew (1967MustangMan) was standing next to me and we were both in awe.
