Ah, I love E3.

Sony's new portable game system, the PSP, was announced today. No pics yet but here is some linkage to specs:

Article on GameSpot

UMD storage, interesting. What do you guys think? Probably $300 initially? I paid that for a TurboExpress and a PC LT, so I'm in... anyone else?

It will take a LOT to unseat the current handheld king (gameboy). I wonder what battery life will be like since it's disc based.

sounds expensive as hell as well... i prefer a 80 dollar gameboy over any handheld costing more than a console

I hate when they announce new technology that won't be available for another year and a half.

yeah true but if its like the N-gauge it probally will be.... i mean they add features and then jack the prices.. one of the great things about the gameboy is that its cheap! and it has proven that graphics dont make the game

Microsoft will make a portable without any games, but with much better specs. It will weigh 24 pounds and require a battery backpack, but it will rule the Sony model!!!

As previously stated, Sony has their work cut out for themselves if they hope to compete against the GameBoy.

The funny thing is that this new handheld will still be referred to as "GameBoy" by a lot of people...

Mom: "Billy, we are leaving! Did you remember your GameBoy?"
Billy: "Yeah mom! And it is a PSP, not a GameBoy!!!"

Am I the only one that thinks that this will DESTROY the GBA? I mean, sony easily toppled nintendo on the console frount.. I've always had problems with Nintendo and their Apple like relationship with hardware (hey, I own a Mac but I do realize that mac is a bit behind in the tech department).. Games do make a console and not the hardware, but Nintendo's annoying love of catridges over CDs cost them to lose a major battle to Sony.. Now the graphics on the GBA remind me of my old turbo express- not bad, but clearly 10 years too late.. I hope sony kicks nintendo in the pants- they make great games but MUST realize that hardware does matter!

u have seen the GBA? it doesnt look 10 years old.. and i think the best games in video game history were for the Snes so playing the ports on a GBA is fine with me, and if sony is using all that technology u think its going to compare at all in price? nintendo has been making the gameboy forever they have alot more experience than sony. And they might also be devloping a sucsessor to the GBA for all we know. Devlopers support the gameboy even though it uses cartridges. Sony's memory system is expensive, if it is the same thing used on Minidisc players than it may const them alot just using that storage media.. i wouldnt count nintendo out of their only area of dominance, they plan to stay around.

A cartridge on a handheld is probably wiser than a disc, since it'll probably increase battery life.

On the Gameboy you also have a lot of software, and it's been top dog for night on 15 years I believe.

Many people say the PS2 is good because it can play PS1 games, the same is true of the Gameboy generations.

Sony will be entering a new market with a new product in an area where the current king really is king.

It might be like MS going into consoles, but Sony will have more experience.

If it does ever get top spot, it'll probably take a while.
Sony may be the top name in consoles, Nintendo is undisputed king of Handhelds.

Yep, the SNES was from around 10 years ago.. I think the GBA is a major advance from the GB but is it really that different than the atari lynx or the turbo express (yes, it's smaller but the graphics are very similar)

Read article.
I don't think it will kill the Gameboy, because it's only vaguely in the same market it seems.
Like the Nokia game phone, it appeals to slightly different market.

Gamecube = cheap, game playing handheld.

PSP = phone(? they do talk of live stuff, suggesting 3G type technology)/video player/game player.

"we aim to become a new driving force in the portable entertainment platform arena"
It seems more aimed at those who want to integrate an mp3 type player, Media jukebox and Gamecube, so it is a different market.
