Just got a replacement drive from Maxtor (DM Plus 45 GB). Installed it and now XP is detecting a "AXV CD/DVD-ROM SCSI SdRom Device" and no HDD. If i go into Device Manager, it shows both the Maxtor and this "new" DVD drive. In Explorer it just shows the DVD drive but won't let me do anything to it. If I uninstall the device and let it re-detect it installs the DVD drive again. Any ideas?

Try to get to Disc Managment and run a FORMAT DRIVE -
Right Click on "My Computer"
about the third choice down "Manage"
chose "Disc Manage"
it should display in the right hand field the Icon for the drive.
Max the display window, click in the area and run "Format Drive"
you can change the drive name, path, and partition if you want while you're there.

That should fix the detect label.

My system keeps incorrectly displaying some CD-R & DVD drives as standard optical drives. Could this be related somehow?

May be. I have never had anything like this happen before. Now that the HDD is being recognized correctly the DVD is gone.
