Ok, I found out the cause of all my hangs and problems in my computer was my sound card. It is a sound blaster live value. I get these wierd lockups. I tried to change the pci slot it was in but no luck. I also tried reinstalling the via drivers 1 by 1. Still no luck. I tried changing the irq but windows wont let me, even after I uncheck that box. So I decided to put it aside and use the on board sound on my mobo. It all works fine until after 20 minutes or so of listening to mp3 or something it just goes out. All I get is a high pitched nasal "weeeeeeeee" that just keeps playing. Anybody know what could be wrong. I am running the latest 2.5 bios from MSI. Is this sould blaster problem with all via chipsets. I really need help. I would just get a new sound card but now that diamond no longer makes sound cards and aureal is out of buisness I think. Who's card do I by. If anyone can give me any advice of help I would be extremely thankful.

If you have a NIC in the machine, try removing that, disabling the onboard sound, add the SB Live! back in, and see if it will grab IRQ 5. It seems that most sound cards (particularly SB) prefer IRQ 5.

There have been tons and tons of reports of problems with the SB Live! (especially when people also installed the Liveware software) and alternately tons and tons of reports of no problems. I've had 1 machine where it worked fine and another where I had alot of probs (and it was a BX not Via).

I ended up putting a Creative/Esonique PC128 card in there until I finally tried the SB Live one more time and got it working.

remove all PCI devices from device manager, and yank all your boards.

reboot, and check what your AGP takes

go back into BIOS, and set all except IRQ 5 for "legacy devices"

power down, stick your SB Live value back in

reboot, install drivers, check your IRQ, should be 5. Disable the SB16 emulation (the source of most problems - do you still play DOS-based games???)

IIRC, the Pro2a has slot 2 as a "dedicated slot" for IRQ's.

Stick your other cards in 1 by 1, but read the manual, it has a section that says what shares with what. I've used too many different mobo's as of late to remember the exact IRQ configuration, but the Pro2a lets you have 3 PCI cards in without sharing between the PCI cards. You'll still have 1 card sharing with the Promise, and 1 card sharing with USB, but that's not so bad.

Also, disable ACPI in BIOS.
