Whoa Maxtor rocks.

Well I bought a used Maxtor 40gig and after about a month of use one morning it made 6 clunking sounds before it spun up. I called Maxtor same day and they replaced it and I had it later that week. Well the replacement took 8-10 secs to spin up when I turn my PC on of the mornings and I thought it was strange but didn't pay any attention to it till it took 15+ secs to spin up and wouldn't spin up sometimes and I would have to hit reset.

I finally called them last Wensday and told them about it they told me to run a dignostics and it failed the smart self test so they replaced it again. I told them if they shipped out refurbished as replacements and he said yes. I also mentioned having to replace the drive once before and that I hope they get it right this time. Well I got my replacement today and looking at the drive the design and everything looked different from my other 2. Looked at the info on it and it says D740X-6L 80GB 😀(which if I aint mistaken it is also 133ATA). I haven't tested it yet but hope it works and do hope its a true 80gig(even though thats overkill for me).

Thats was awful nice of them huh 😀.

What was funny is before I opened it I thought it would be nice if they quit making that model or something and sent me a even newer and bigger drive and it came true 🙂.
 
That's nice and all, but what would have been better is if the first 2 hadn't failed to begin with. It's not uncommon for HD manufacturers to replace drives with larger new ones. I believe it was NFS4 that recently replaced an 80GB WD and got a 100GB in its place. I also have a friend that replaced a Seagate drive a while back and got a larger model in its place. Good customer service is fine and dandy, but I would be much happier not having to use it in the first place.
 
While its bad they shipped you another bad drive, their VERY good with customer service, and are very good at replacing drives. Always prompt and fast.
 
Aah well that bodes well for me cause my 40 gb'er just kicked the bucket tonight....left me just enought time to back things up before it sang its last squeak and died. Its about 1 1/2 years old but I hope they'll still replace it.

I agree and I can't understand all the people who praise Matrox because they get their RMAs back quickly.

To me it makes much more sense to praise a company whose drives never fail so you never even need to deal with their RMA process.
 
Don't get me wrong I wish the first hadnt died at all because it costs me $8+ to ship the HD back to them and I will be about $18 after shipping this back. All I know is I am glad they stand behind their products if one does die. I guess its just a matter of luck. I have owned mostly WD the years I have been working on PC's and have never had one fail. I finally give Maxtor a try and I am on my 3rd drive.

Heres a question when Maxtor gets my 40gb back will they charge me since they sent a bigger drive? Or do they even know they made the mistake?
 
it's extremely common that they do this:

i just replaced my 20gb Futjisu and they sent me a 40gb in return...which failed, and was replaced for another 40gb which i'm currently using...hope the beotch doesn't die...

i hdds...they're the only things that seem to fail for me...i always have an extra that i use for backup - actually, it's a 4-5 year old maxtor drive still purring along...hey, maxtor does rock!
