Whoa! legacy-free, integrated mobo from Abit - the AT7

Martin

Lifer
This caught my attention 🙂

No serial, PS/2 or parallel ports, but instead:

Ethernet
Digital Audio in/out
2 Firewire
6 USB2.0
6 IDE channels

I guess anyone with a halfway decent business-class laser printer gets to spend $30 for a parallel to USB adapter. How exciting. Why would someone build a mobo without a parallel port anyway? Most of the USB printers are cheapo inkjet crap... (yes, there are exceptions, I know, but you get the point).

Nack

Like sunner said, at a business it doesnt do any good to have the printer teid to just one computer, at my house I have my printer hooked up to my router which has a built in print server.

Does a USB keyboard or mouse work in your BIOS?

What about during Windows installation when a USB mouse will not work?

It works that way right now with current motherboards.

Why do you need a boot disk to install Win2k when all modern systems can boot directly from the CDROM? Anyway, I have a USB mouse, printer, scanner, and digital camera, and am pleased with all of them.

....

Win2k and WinXP are bootable CDs.

Some Intel boards also support booting from USB devices (such as those pen-drives), this new board probably does too.

Why would you dislike a USB keyboard, modem, scanner, etc.? The alternative legacy ports are inferrior in just about every way.

Yes, USB mice and keyboards definitely work in BIOS.

Funny. It doesn't with my P4T-E. It didn't with my VP6.

I know for a fact that neither would work with a USB mouse while installing XP.

That is strange. I know the Intel 850 boards' legacy usb support didn't come along until recent bios updates.
I don't know about the p4t-e though.

Legacy USB support provides USB functionality where there normally is not USB support.
Its all provided by the motherboard and works for everything even if something doesn't support usb natively.
Including the BIOS, DOS, etc.

After initial setup, the OS then would take control of usb devices once the drivers are loaded, which XP should do.
At least it did for me.

I didn't have any usb devices until my CUSL2 board, but it worked that way back then.

You have to set your bios for support for usb in bios in abit boards, even my old bh6 had that feature. If you had it set to OS support which is the default setting then it wouldnt work for installing xp or 2k.

There should be an option in bios for supporting usb Kb and mouse in your P4T-E. There has been one in almost all newer mobos I have used within last year. I guess it is not default in the P4T-E.
