I never really thought IMAP was all that wonderful.

For any business that has users on the go, pop3 is simply unnacceptable.

I totally agree. I run my own mail server and I support both pop3, IMAP, and a web interface. When I have my computer running I use POP3 but I like being able to access my mail via the web interface when I am not at home. I just never saw a reason to use IMAP eventhough I have it available.

I wish when I worked at Clemson University that we had IMAP because we had professors that had laptops and getting them setup so that one pop client leaves mail on the server the other pops and deletes the mail is a hassle. Especially explaining it to users.

I guess I should have worded my post better. I never saw that IMAP was all that great for normal people that get most of their mail in one location.

aren't you subject to the server's storage limitations? i have somewhere around 200 MB of emails, i don't think anything but POP would work for me.

We use IMAP email at U of M. The three main programs we use are Pine, Mulberry (blech) and IMP webmail (part of the Horde project). I'm in love with IMAP and I'd never go back. I hope I never have to.

I just wonder why it's not used more frequently.

probably because it uses up more resources on the server's side... that's my guess

I don't really like IMAP or POP3, I just ssh to my mailserver and attach my screen session running mutt, I would hate to have to use another mail client and worry about settings being different, etc 😛
