I just did a reformat last night and because of school had to leave my system pretty much un-updated all day. I set my router to block anything trying to get to my comp so it'd be okay, and it was for the day. I got home, set the router to DMZ my computer (too lazy to forward a few ports and stuff), and started downloading a few patches. Within 10 minutes I got RPC exploited. Oh damn, right, that thing. So after it reboots my computer, the first thing I do is download the RPC patch. Within 10 seconds of being up and running, I got the RPC thing AGAIN. I didn't even have time to complete the download. So I do this again and get a little more of the patch, and again... Finally I have it and start installing. RPC reboot cut that off before it could finish. Fsck. Okay, so I unplug my networking cable, reboot again, and start installing. I finally get it installed. Ha! Take that you RPC motherfvcker! I plug the network back in, and proceed to do some more windows updating. Within 15 seconds, I get the RPC message again! I mean, I FIGURED you had to reboot to activate the fix, but what are the chances right?
So I got owned a few times and that's my story.
Lessons learned: RPC really was that bad (I never had problems before), and firewalls are your friend.
