I was driving my sister's car tonight for about the fourth time in my life..and it's been pretty trouble free up, up until tonight when it was raining pretty hard. I was even going a little slower than usual, as compared to in my Integra..but as I was making a left turn I had one of the scariest experiences of my life.

Right as I was finishing my left turn, which would've landed me in the middle of three lanes, I suddenly felt the wheel jerk HARD to the left, so I immediately countered by going to the right, which jerked too almost sending me into the sidewalk. But luckily I apparently was able to get it straight again, and VERY luckily there were no cars around me. It was quite a scare, as I did get pretty close to the curb, and couldn't imagine what could've happened if it were like a two lane road or something.

And even stranger was that I was heading home from a temple because I thought my sister had taken me there to do some stuff about my uncle who had died a month earlier..so I figured I'd come, but it was just actually some regular services that were taking place, and I didn't want to waste a couple of hours there so I took her car to go home. Was that a sign  ;)

Oh, and btw this is a new Explorer, not the old ones with the infamous Firestones.

I don't know..must be that whole oversteer thing since her Explorer is RWD.

My thumb is actually still hurting from the impact the wheel made when it jerked back.

That shouldn't have had anything to do with the wheel jerking..that's not oversteer.

Yeah, my car "jerks" to the side when I step on the gas while going around a corner in the rain, too.

i'm really not a car person so dont' take my opininion too seriosuly.
But when i drive in the rain...sometimes my power steering goes out and if it happens during a turn it feels like the wheel is trying to go the other way. so that's what it sounds like happened to you. although i can't imagine a new ford explorer having the same problems as my '88 escort

You totally jogged my memory! So maybe I can solve this mystery... I'm not much of a car person so this knowledge is based off a conversation I had with a car obsessed friend.
Anyway, if your serpentine belt gets wet, perhaps from a heavy rain, it could slip. Lots of things run off the serpentine belt, one of which is your power steering. So what happened I'm guessing is that your serpentine belt got too wet, it slipped, messing with your power steering, then recaught and you were able to keep on driving. Although for this to happen I would think you'd have to have driven into a fairly deep puddle.
