i was driving home and the sky is lighter than normal i think... anyways at around 2:40 there is this huge surge of light in the sky... it wasn't like lightening, it was the entire sky lighting up for like half a second... it seemed to get lighter, stayed at that level, then a nother surge lighter, then back down to what it was the rest of the night.

:Q

or maybe i just need more sleep... i dunno... it was freaky

I don't have any windows not covered with blinds so I didn't notice anything, but it DOES seem lighter than normal outside, I noticed that about 10 mins ago when I was in the kitchen....

We are going through a strong solar wind the last couple days. Maybe it was the aurora?

Meteors dont make loud bangs tho. Any type of combustible material in them would have been exploded way earlier on entry into that atmosphere. Seems fishy. I'm looking through several records for other space junk/debree and none of them are saying anything about a large bang. My dad said that when space lab fell nothing exploded on it.

So....

Sure they do ... sonic booms. Has to be pretty far into the atmosphere to hear this, but they do.

Cool stuff. I wish I would've been outside when it happened, that's assuming that I'd even have been able to see it down here in Portland.

Hmm...

Sonic booms happen when you break the sound barrier right? But shouldnt meteors be going faster than the speed of sound before entering the atmosphere? I mean then again, there is no atmosphere in space, so there is no pressure to build up at the front of the object. But then....there is a different air viscocity at different levels in the atmosphere...so the build up would be different. I dunno...guess im just over analyzing it. Sonic booms do make sense though.

I saw it last night when I was doing my homework. Weird. I figured it was either a meteor or an explosion, guess it wasn't an explosion.
