It's amazing how big of an effect networking can have. I truly discovered the other day that it isn't what you know, but who you know.
I went to school with a couple guys who started a hip hop group. These guys live and breathe hip hop and they're good (been featured on MTVu, etc). They put on shows all the time and have teamed up with several well known hip hop artists. Despite that, they still haven't made a career out of what they do, and don't have a real label. Their music isn't for everyone, but if you like underground hip hop, you may like it: Link
Then, out of nowhere, a couple other kids (from the same high school actually, a couple years younger) decide to start their own group. I'm not here to slam them, but they obviously don't have as much lyrical talent. That being said, one of their brothers is an amazing video producer, and they both come from very wealthy families. This combination was enough to get them a record with a very well known label company, and they are now "on their way". I was blown away when I saw their video: Link
I feel bad for the first guys. The whole thing must be pretty discouraging. Just thought I would share!
