The way things are right now who in their right mind would want to be president? Let?s say your elected you are going to be expected to reduce gas prices, do something for healthcare and Social Security, handle the situations in Iran, North Korea, and Venezuela, pull the troops out of Iraq and maintain a growing economy without raising taxes.

I think the next president will be in for a difficult time especially if it is a Democrat. If a Dem gets in and blows it I?d say that is pretty much it for the party for awhile.

I?m sure all of you democrats will jump on this about how bad Bush is and while he has done some things I disagree with you have to remember doing the necessary (not suggested everything he has done was necessary or right) thing is often not the popular thing.

I think many people would still want to be president. When the previous guy stinks, it is so much easier to look good.

Plus some people believe they can make a difference... to them I say good luck.

You have to be insane to want to be president anytime since the mid 1900s. Looking at the last few presidents just backs that up.

WRONG. That's just the current administration's take on the position.

In reality, you are responsible for and have to answer to EVERY AMERICAN CITIZEN. We do live in a DEMOCRACY, remember?

The next person to hold the office is, by now, pre-ordained to get screwed. GWB has built a house of cards in every arena, foreign, domestic, economic, etc.. Any of these collapsing may cause a cascade that drops them all. And the person in office will be blamed for it all.

You're right. I totally forgot about this administrations "out of the norm" way of running things. I guess after almost eight years, I lost track of the way things should be.

oh lets see.....Kerry, Gore , Dean, and about a thousand other wannabe's
They will just blame any problems on the last administration.
So its a ready made scapegoat.

I do wonder if Presidents will be marginalized with the advent of 24 hour news and blogs where the smallest of things get blown into a story.

Look at the Clintons 2nd term and Bush's 2nd term. I question whether presidents in the future have a shot at doing anything in the 2nd term.

I read the OP and thought that I would love to be because I honestly believe that I would be able to make a difference even if I had to do it by brute force. Then I thought, "Oh my god, I have just become GW" and got really scared.

In reality, I would really hope that I would be able to bring together a staff that would bring about the best changes for the country. One that would be able to find money to truly finance alternate fuel sources so that the gas/oil industry loses their stranglehold on the country and the population can spend their earnings on things that will benefit their family. One that would be able to bring nations together at a table to discuss amicable solutions to solving problems that have plagued us for years instead of on a battlefied trying to force them to do things our way. One that would find ways to cut the deficit so that we were actually moving forward as a country economically and not just playing some three-card monty with the payments hoping to hit the big one.

But alas, I don't have the name, connections or, most importantly today, the money to even be on a town council. But a guy can dream, right?

Look at it this way---something is a little upside down when you have to spend much much much more to be elected
than the job pays-----what person in their right mind would engage in that crazyness?---now having explained the mental state of every recent President its important to explain its really done with other peoples money--making the President also the biggest whore on the planet. Who must then pay back some and screws the rest.

Bottom line, we are not selecting the best leaders--and really blew it with GWB-----whomever comes in after him will have to spend the bulk of their time undoing GWB policy. In many ways that is what happened to GHB--who was the unlucky smuck having to raise taxes to pay for Ronald Reagan excesses. And lost the election to Clinton. Nor was Clinton a great President,
But Clinton simply failed to do greatly stupid things--so the country prospered--even got to the point of a slight budget surplus.
Which GWB squandered in his first year----and its been downhill ever since.

Dream is hopefully still part of the American way and still a possibility.

I get a lot of support everyday.

Now the challenge is to launch an even better campaign than Dean did two years ago.

I could see a lot of people wanting to be president. If someone feels the goverment is not the way it should be and would like to change the way our country is running..... why not?

If I were president, I would show people that I believe in them. Each of us are unique, powerful, and incredibly lucky to be living in a world where we have so many choices. If you look at your life -- there are so many beautiful things you could choose to do. And I love everyone because they try to make the right decisions even if they often don't. It doesn't matter if you disagree with my policies or not. You see, everyone is beautiful and has enormous potential. Our country is our people. I would ask people to look into their hearts and seriously consider the value of their lives. Hopefully they would realize how special they are.

And why would I do that? Because people are enormously capable. They are going to need to harness that capability in order to achieve what I would ask of them.

Imagine a world where everyone is united by their ability to act and not by their actions. Imagine a great well of desire spilling through each of us as we work toward the dream of a better world.

If I were president, I would demand a lot from my constituents. But I would have faith in them. People are wonderful.

People suck. We're selfish, short sighted, etc., etc.

If I were president Id get the country back moving in the right track. That is, if I could have everything they way I wanted it to be. Unfortunately the special interests groups would have a cow, but to them I say, tough $#it.

Who would want to be President? Someone who could manipulate politics and government deals so that he could become fabulously rich after leaving office. Beats me.
LOL

here's the thing. special interest groups get dogged all the time, but special interest groups are the people, aren't they? groups of individuals banded together b/c they believe passionately about a certain special issue? Pro-Life groups, Pro-Choice-groups, Sierra Club, AFL-CIO. So long as there are like-minded individuals passionate enough in what they believe in to pool their resources together and get involved in politics via lobbyists, leg. proposals, etc., there will always be special interest groups. can't get rid of them, nor should you.

If that's how you feel about yourself then that's your choice. If I were president I would ask that people take individual responsibility for their lives. Whether or not you think "people suck" is irrelevant, because you are not them. As president, I would have faith in you. But that faith would come with high expectations.

I could dispute that, but now the man's dead.

Edit

If JFK hadn't been shot, he would have been a great, great president.

i meant now and in the future... there were several great presidents during the last century. I just think that every election from now until eternity will be one wherein we're forced to choose the lesser of two evils. Our choices will get worse and worse every time... on every side.
