What's the deal with Fabergé eggs?

"Winter egg" sold for $5.5 million.

Apparently that egg is worth almost $10 million as of the last estimate in 2002.

They are completely made of precious jewels and the artist is very famous and I believe most of them were made for Russian royalty.

Not only are they works of art, at this point they are also antiques. The last one was made near the begining of the last century.
