A stock processor, maybe AMD in Q3 2007 with an Athlon FX 66, Intel will have a Quad Core though so they won't likely be concentrating on Clockspeed as much anymore.
 
My AM2 3500+ has been OC'd up to 3.3 GHz at 1.55-1.6V, pretty sure it can go higher with water cooling; Core 2 Duos can be OC'd up to around 3.6 GHz with a good board and good air cooling.

Yes, that's true, but a quick look on XtremeSystems will reveal many people who have OC'd their X2 or Opteron DC chips higher than 3.2 GHz on watercooling (even a few on air). So 3.2 GHz really isn't that amazing.

And? Look on XS and you see people with Conroe XE's at around the 4Ghz mark on air. One guy has a Quad-Core Kentsfield at 3.8Ghz on air as well.
 
Who will actually release the chip clocked at that speed? I actually have the feeling that AMD will.. Intel is going quad-core, and AMD might get an extra .2-.4 ghz out of their switch to 65 nm- that would put them near that mark..
 
AMD is dead until K8L .... but if AMD do jump into 65nm u should be able to see some good overclocking, perhaps 3.5Ghz on air with 5200+??!

also dont put too much hope on the Conroe b2 steppings (retail), it "might" not OC as good as the ES5 made us believe. Im still getting it

B1 , stepping 5 or before = ES
B2 , stepping 6 = retail

i have seen about 5 chips now, 2 X6800, 1 E6300, 1 E6400, 1 E6600 all stepping B2, and yeah they were disappointing,

E6700 was suppose to do 4GHz on air, and E6600 somewhere close to that with ES5, now its only about 3.6GHz(E6600)

it is only 3 more speed steps over the 5000+, and the first of these is due in a month or two..... Q2 2007?

oh, and this is stock speed i am after.

Yeah, three more steps. That would mean a 5600+ from AMD.. and I wouldn't be real surprised to see one of those somewhere around next summer. AMD will continue to try to squeeze ghz out of their chips until K8L. 65nm could help them squeeze just a little more. I think they'll release a 3.4 ghz FX-66, with the 5600+ at 3.2 ghz.. it'll just be about another year.

Probably not, since AMD dumped their 1MB cache processors.
 
i'm talking about 512kb parts

5000+ = 2.6GHz = now
5200+ = 2.8GHz = Sept 06
5400+ = 3.0GHz = Jan 07 ???
5600+ = 3.2GHz = May 07 ???

It may be even sooner than that now that Intel is supposedly moving their quad core processors to this year.

Guess I had a brain fart oops 😀, yeah I actually am aware of the X6900, for Q4 release, though i guess I didn't read the title properly, as the correct answer is hard to determine at this point in time.

We know that Intel will likely have the first 3.2GHZ EE, and AMD will follow in Q3 2007, however, it is unknown at this time when a mainstream edition, if there will be one even, with the move to Quad Core, then Dual Core speed ramping may not continue as much down the road.

A 3.2GHZ Athlon 64 would be actually a 6400+ I think for a 2x1MB version.

5200+ = FX60
5600+ = FX62
6000+ = FX64 and finally
6400+ = FX66

For Intel it's easy.

Core 2 Duo E6900. But i doubt it will ever come to pass, with the concentration of mainstreaming Quad Core.

 
OMG Intel did it already!!

Its like the old mhz race all over again 🙂 Intel have the capability to reach 3.2 ghz before AMD with their core2duo, as i think AMD will need 65nm to get that high and they wont have that for a while. Depends when each company releases it though, my moneys on Intel.

cheers, but i'm looking for mainstream (i.e. non EE/FX) processors.
