It was ok but the problem I had was it's a pain to understand what they are talking about at times because of how they have them speaking and it looks to be a cowboy and indians type show and I am not really that interested in that type of time and history like I am in others.

I will watch the next few episodes but every time I see the guy running the railroad business I can't stop thinking he needs to stfu and beam someone over. :p

Actually since the show is about the rolling camp that moved along with the workers on the transcontinental railroad it seems to be a very appropriate title. Think of it as a mobile "Deadwood" or Sutter's Mill.

I plan on watching it tonight.
THis, like Walking Dead I fear, will suffer from my constant thinking "This would be sooooooooooooooooo much better if it was on HBO. Still "good", but not the awesome it could be on a premium channel."

I watched it. Seems not too bad so far. I will continue to watch as long as it stays this good. It would be nice if it improved as it has potential to.

Pilot had some shaky moments, but overall showed potential. Not a great pilot episode, but not bad by any means either.

I hope they settle in and have a good first season, but for now I'll keep watching.

i love it, good character build. great suspense. great scene of the Indians fucking up the survey camp. awesome sets that they had a large budget to make and capture what a railroad came was all about.

one character i hate is the rail road mogul aka chief O'Brien. god i hate his voice, looks and acting.

HoW is a lot better than the snoozefest walking dead has turned into.

That is pretty much how I feel as well. The pilot didn't blow me away. In particular I was not impressed with the acting of Anson Mount who plays the main character. He just seemed a little flat to me. Hopefully it will get better, I like westerns.

Yea, I'm hoping it gets better. It seems like the kinda show that'll get better after several episodes. There are lot of shows I don't think have a GREAT pilot, but are still great shows.

In terms of Anson Mount: I don't think it was his fault per say. They took his character all over the place.
He's a badass who kills people in churches, he's a confederate soldier, he's a former slave owner, psych he actually let his slaves go before the war, aww he just misses his wife, look at him make friends with common, etcetc
I hope this is just part of what made the pilot shakey - they tried to do a lot with the pilot and might have overreached just a little.

If nothing else: I'll keep watching to watch Chief O'Brien bash heads.

... it looks to be a cowboy and indians type show and I am not really that interested in that type...

Think of the Indians as colorful zombies and/or the time as the future and the landscape as that of a planet in an alternate universe accessible only through a time portal and you'll probably love the living hell out of it then! :p

Fwiw, I watched and thought it was sub-standard on a number of points, including but not limited to
the noble Southerner who befriends the even more noble black man and the pasty white woman who manages to out wrestle and then kill an Indian warrior
but . . . it's TV and it might get better.

I also couldn't stand the railroad mogul. A ton of cardboard characters in this would-be opus.

I watched it after my mom told me about it... I thought it was good. Nothing great but good enough to keep me watching new episodes, at least for awhile. My mom thought it was hard to follow what was going on with everything, and my uncle had the same complaint and didn't like it at all but he was tired and most likely drunk anyway so take that for what it's worth.

One question, is "Hell on Wheels" the name of the tent town where the workers are staying? Meaning, the town's location actually moves as the workers follow the railroad's expansion?

That's my understanding, yes. They used camp cars and moved them as they went along, there were no roads or commuter vehicles at that time, so the camp moved along with the build.

I watched, it was okay, but I thought a little slow for a pilot. I'm a railroader, so I'll keep watching anyway. I trust that AMC will pull through, but I hope it won't go the way of Rubicon.

I watched it because it's an AMC original and there haven't been too many Westerns on free cable recently.

It was a bit scattered but I'm willing to give it a few episodes.

The fake locomotive engine was constructed just for the 1865-era TV show, since the oldest authentic engine they could afford was made about 1910. There's a short video about the construction of the locomotive engine.

Here's some photos of operational engines they could have used:
