certainly the original pre-european population had some good generations.

the settlers did some amazing things - some bad ones, too, but an awful lot of people live here because they created the society.

the revolution-era dudes created the country. nice. thanx to the soldiers that defeated the british and allowed us to become our own nation.

lots of exploration, maybe not all PC, but it sure created a large USA and some enduring western myths. thanx to the soldiers who were doing their jobs, even though we don't see killing natives as a good thing any more. not all military decisions turn out to be great to future generations.

the civil war years were pretty intense. when I was a kid a hundred years later people were still fighting that war. thanx to the soldiers who kept the country from splitting into two.

my personal vote would be for the generation that was born just before 1900: they were born into a largely rural US, before cars, airplanes, electricity, etc, and died 70 years later in a country that we would recognize; fought WWI, survived the depression, was too old to fight WWII but held up their end at home, and so on. my grandfather got gassed on WWI, it's hard to imagine what they all went thru. thanx to them all. too bad it didn't exactly turn out to be the war to end all wars.

the WWII generation helped Europe win WWII. Good job, gang. But they remain the only people in the history of the world to use atomic weapons on other people. life's decisions aren't always easy. thanx to all who died for freedom.

I happen to belong to the baby boom bunch, and I modestly wouldn't evaluate us just yet. But we have made some great music. thanx to all my friends from HS whose names are on the wall, and all the others.

The generation just coming of age now has invented the internet, without which I wouldn't be typing this. And they are far more global, integrated, etc than the society I grew up in. Interesting. thanx to those who are defending us now.
