Who wants to buy me a new VW Bus?

I'm finally giving up on the Great White Bus. Too much rust.

I got a line on a 78 in beautiful shape and fresh top end (I know, I did it for the guy) for $3k. Now here's hoping my tax return will be enough... heh

(Here's a link to the GWB.)

I always loved the VW bus, a true icon of the 60's🙂

Do they still make them? If not whats the last model?

1979 was the last year in the US, 2003 (I think) was the last year in Brazil.

I believe they're still being made in South Africa though...

As long as I got it running, natch.

The engine is tight. The heads need some work though. But it'll run sweet now.

My biggest issue is the craptastic stock carbs. Grr...

Don't those things scream
"Hey cops, come pull me over and search my ride" ?

I think I heard once that a VW bus itself was legally
enough probable cause for cops to pull you over and look for drugs.

HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAH!

There are so many of 'em here in CO (and in CA as well, actually way more in CA) that they'd be pulling over busses left and right.

And since most bus pilots are 30-somethings now, it'd be pretty unproductive.

🙂

VW makes somthing called the Euro-Van nowadays thats supposed to be the Bus replacement ... doesn't hold a candle to the original!

And they're horribly expensive.

VW is going to start rebadging Chrysler minivans next year. Oh yay. :|

For some reason VW seems clueless as to what made the old air cooled models so popular worldwide. They were the model for basic, reliable, and affordable transportation and VW has not been able to replicate that success with anything they have released since that time.

If only they'd just do the minimum updates to the design necessary for safety and emissions then re-release it... I'd definitely be in line to buy one.

Yikes... expensive stuff. I think at those prices I'd rather just rebuild my Type 1 and slap on a turbo 😀

No they stopped production in South Africa in 2001/2 if I remember correctly, they are now mainly used as a public transport medium.

We had two, I crashed one, in the rain, against a 2m steel pole filled with concrete to avoid hitting another suddenly car in the behind, best option I guess, but it was writen off 🙁.

Yeah, but you won't get 300 RELIABLE horsies out of a built Type 1. 🙂

I agree... but hopefully I won't need 300 😛
I'd be happy to pass the triple digit barrier 😉
