Who wants my CPU cycles?

OK, FaD is ending and I'm completely lost. It took a LOT to get me off SETI Classic and over to FaD. I have really enjoyed to FaD project, it's exactly the kind of project I want to use my power for.

I can't decide where to put my CPU cycles next. Maybe if I lay down my criteria some TeAmmate will convince me:

1) Would like it to be disease orientated, especially cancer, but I'm a little open here.
2) Must have a normal, kickass, robust client, i.e. no screen saver only.
3) Must be for a non-profit cause.
4) Must be able to hide the client, i.e. no system tray icon or any other indication the project is running, task mgr is OK. (Work morons might shut if off if they can see it.)
5) Must be able to run on a 256MB system without interfering with MS Office apps (remember the SETI Outlook bug?).
6) Must be able to have a steady stream of work, I HATE downtime due to lack of work.
7) STATS, must have excellent STATS for me to behold! :p
8) Would like to help one of the smaller AT TeAms.

I'm currently 6th on the FaD TeAm (95th overall) and 22nd on the SETI Classic TeAm (top 1000 overall). I come packing a little heat. Who wants me? :)

We couldn't convince ya to come back to the dark side and run SETI Classic for TABOO and help Eltano hit 10K could we? ;)

I have know idea what I'm going to do after SETI Classic is over. I might keep an eye out for the responses here, as I have similar requrements, even though I'm running DIMES on a few PCS, but it doesn't run hidden and it seems like I have to baby sit it a bunch.

Good luck with the DC hunt! :D

Based on your requirements I'd recommend Folding@Home or Rosetta@Home.

F@H is the most obvious choice as it meets requirements 1-7 on your list easily. However it is not one of the smaller TeAms here... we usually have just shy of 200 users submitting at least one WU each week. Only SETI and FaD are bigger. We still need your help though... we have been stuck in 25th place all year. I, for one, am expecting many of the Dutch Power Cows on FaD to move over to their F@H team... they're just a couple spots ahead of us here as well

Rosetta@Home would meet all of your requirements except #6... it's a very new project and there were one or two wonky episodes when I was running it last month where it briefly ran out of work. However you could reasonably expect them to get most of the gremlins ironed out within a few months. Could be something fun for you to experiment with on a box or three while the rest run F@H.

Have fun picking your new project, "once a TeAmmate always a TeAmmate" after all!

Let me try to pitch Seventeen or Bust here.

1) Well, disease oriented it's not. But I think 1 and 3 are mutually exclusive now that FaD is gone. :( Edit: I guess not: F@H is not for profit!
2) It has a very normal client. I even use it for searching for my own primes (which I try to do once a year).
3) Definitely not for profit. GIMPS is the only prime project that could concievably be for profit.
4) If you use the service installer, and turn off restarting when the taskbar is created (run "sobsvc -k"), it tends to stay hidden. Better still, "sobsvc -m" makes the client restart if anyone stops it! :D To stop it yourself, run 'net stop "seventeen or bust service"'.
5) "sobsvc -x" Causes the service to run the clients at "true idle" - lowest possible priority. RAM requirements have been increasing, but shouldn't exceed 32MB in the forseeable future.
6) The work server's almost never down. Also, you can queue up extra work with my SBQueue
7) Lots of stats on the main site, and GeoffS has stats for it too.
8) We have 349 current members who have ever produced something. Only 27 returned results yesterday. We were recently passed by the DPC, putting us in 3rd place, and we're likely to be passed by Team Retro within a month!

As mentioned already, F@H and Rosetta are both related to health. Although they are looking at Proteins rather than actual drugs. Rosetta and F@H are both non-profit. And both can be installed as a service. As far as stats, IMHO any BOINC project has the better offering. :)

Which is of course Rosetta... at least for now until F@H-BOINC comes out within the next year or two.

Major difference between F@H stats and BOINC stats is that BOINC automatically tallies machine-level "Host" stats whereas the only way to do this now on F@H is to install a 3rd party program. However outside of that one issue, some of the F@H stats sites out there are among the best-designed and feature laden of all DC stats sites out there for any project, period.

Aside from not being disease oriented, the Einstein@Home project should fit the bill for the rest of the points. Maybe just setup one machine with it and see if you like it? :)

It's a BOINC project, non-profit, very scientific, can be run as a service.. can cache additional work so no connection issues that I'm aware of.. worth a look at least. Relatively small TA team with good stats available. :)

Hey Thad
I think you need to come on over to Rosetta with the RA. We would be starting almost even in the stats and yes I know it BOINC but Rosetta doesn't have some of the thing the BOINC seti does and it's been working fine for me.

Hey there Thad...

Come help me with a couple of our TA lagging projects. Dimes, works great without taking a ton of CPU. And then I am also running BOINC Rosetta, and as a backup 60/40% running PrimeGrid. That project need a couple more fat burners on it to catch up. We are currently in 58th place, but about 10 more machines on this and we'd be up in the top 10 in about 2 weeks.

Just my thoughts, kinda upset that FAD has gone by the wayside, seems like all the crunching we did of the last several months will not even be clinically tested... That is why I just bailed the day they came out with it. I too, want to find a health benifit with all my cpu power and Rosetta seems like a good place to bet on.

BTW: your #8 fits PrimeGrid... There are only 4 members, and only 2 producing point today and yesterday. It is a RSA project not health based but could use a bit of help.

Hey BadThad :)

I'll make points for F@H, some will repeat what kb3edk says:

1. This thread tells about F@Hs cancer project and has links to more good information.

2. Version 5 client has many great features. Version 6 is due soon and will have even more great features.

3. Stanford University's biochemistry dept. runs this project. It is non-profit and freely shares its research and has many published papers.

4. The v5 console client can easily be run as a service. Just answer "yes" during configuration.

5. They made a special release version 5 client especially for this reason. During config you can set the amount of ram you want the client to report to the Assignment Server and it will not send WUs that require more ram than you set.

6. Stanford has over 30 servers. In almost two years folding I have not had a problem getting WUs. There is also a Collection Server that takes WU results if the server that sent the WU is temporarily down.

7. There are many excellent stats sites. Your points will take up to a couple hours to show on them though.

8. If you look at our rank, we are a smaller TeAm. We have 90 - 110 send in results per average day. We do not have many BIG contributors. You would easily be our biggest. The TeAm is only in 25th place and is in need of help to advance to this TeAms' rightful place in this established DC project.

Rosetta does not have any diseases it is trying to cure.

Thanks to anyone considering this project

EDIT: spelling

Thanks for the input everyone, it's VERY helpful. I've decided to test the BOINC project Rosetta. The TeAm is small and project is pretty new, looks like they could use the help. :)

i will say after a few early bumps in the road, i really enjoyed rosetta last month as our TAS project. i'll probably dedicate at least one core to it come the new year.

thats a good call BT.

Awesome Thad...

Be sure to put PrimeGrid as your backup if you run out of WUs on Rosetta. :)
