your opinions? does/should the manager usually work longer hours because of the extra responsibility? or is the other way around?

talking mostly about salaried jobs, where your hours are generally "until the work is done".

I'd like to think that most managers will stay just as long as the people working under them, and the opposite as well. While one person might be accountable, it's a group task.

To me it just seems to be more of a personal thing based upon homelife and/or priorities. I haven't seen enough disparity based upon position to make any other generalization.

Single people, or people with miserable/stressful homelives burrow themselves into work and hate going home. Those are the people that work ridiculous hours.

My boss is usually gone. He doesn't come in till 10 and leaves at 3. Often times he's leaving in the afternoon for meetings in another building so I don't know when he actually gets off. I think he comes back at like 7 and works late nights, leaving home once his kid goes to bed.

We have an hourly guideline in my group. I pretty much follow that and don't wait for the mgr to leave. Plus people have kids so they leave when they need to. As long as the work gets done, it doesn't really matter as far as I am concerned.

Most of the time the managers arrive early and leave later but have had some cases where they come later and leave early (for all the wrong reasons) or don't show at all, heh.

I'd be pissed if my underlings left before me, so they stay until after I leave.

I can't keep up with my boss. He works like crazy and does not know what a weekend is.

The manager cause they relax more during the day and still have more stuff to do;). At my first job, some of my supervisors stayed till 1am and they came in at 7am. My second job, everyone was gone by 6pm or they got special permission to stay late (stupid corporate rules).

My department - usually the peons.
At my power plant, the workers work way more hours than the management. It's not even a close race.

At my work, everyone leaves at the same time. It's a race as the last person to leave has to lock the gate.

Higher level management at my company is expect to put in a lot of hours, so my boss works more hours that I do, and her boss works longer hours than she does.
