The more you classify and segregate topics, the less participation you get.
 
I thought about this myself.

Even though there seems to be a sudden influx of automobile topics once in awhile, you don't want to stretch the topics too far out from the general public. Like the Motherboard/CPU forum, most people still post in the General Hardware forum because that's generally where all the tech guru's hang out.

I know i have always wanted to have more threads abouts about cysts on peoples' asses and about how your girlfriend dumped you and about how the heartache is SOOOOOOOOO bad.

Actually, politics and news was givin it's own forum because of the political flame wars and repetitive topics that literally took over the forums- I never really agreed with making a separate forum, but the same general idea still remains. Cars are off topic, and there is no real reason to create another forum if OT isn't being flooded with car topics. Yea, there are a little more than usualy, but that always happens when pictures from the major car shows start hitting the net.

we already got to me forums, just have fs/trade, hotdeals, ATOT, genearl hardware, video, politics and news, and software

And I agree that it serves the purpose of satisfying the demand for political flamefest and keeps that crap out of OT. Car topics can remain in OT, I think, because they don't generate the same kind of heated pointless "discussion".

But is that not the purpose of OT? A culmination of all other discussions besides ones we have organized forums for???

Besides, isn't Anandtech dedicated to technolog??? Before we and ask for more forums geared toward specific "off topic" items such as cars, etc, shouldn't someone take the YAGT.org route and setup an unassociated message board, or just use any number of other message boards on the Internet??

I'm sure there are a number of people that can use their dirt cheap web hosting and setup a message board, without it making a dent at their bandwidth.
 
People will still post in OT anyway because they're "in a hurry" and "it gets more traffic" just like some people do with hardware and software questions.
