I want to get a Panasonic (i think it's SL-SX420) MP3/CD player that costs $100 CND, about $66 USD. The guy at the store said it just came out like a week ago. I was wondering if anyone had this or any other panasonic CD player around this price. It looks like a really good deal and comes with a remote too, but for some reason, maybe because of the clear plastic, it seems like it has a cheap construction. Almost looks like it could break to pieces if I dropped it on the floor.

Any opinions are welcome, thanks.

By the way, PLEASE don't recommend the iRiver SlimX because I can't seem to get my hands on it from anyone who ships to my location and sells at a good price.

I think panasonic products are pretty good.
I've had the tv, vcr, camcorder, and none of them ever gave me any problem.
My tv is 6 years old now and still work perfectly.

Sony products are nice but overpriced... :(

It plays CDs.

It is not however a good cd player. You're looking at about 400 dollars and up for a good cd player.

I have a Panasonic portable CD player from 98, about a year ago it stopped working because one of those electric pathway things that connects to the battery somehow got disconnected and I don't have the equipment to try to fix it. It was under heavy use though, and was dropped many times, so I'd say thats really all you can expect out of a <$100 portable.

Out of all the personal cd players out there, I'd get a Panasonic. I've had mine for 5 years and it works just like the day it was bought. :)

Let's see if i can remember a few model numbers:

ct470
ct570
ct780

and that really cool-looking one that looks like a frisbee :p Those are good cd players. I have the ct570 myself--it has a pretty strong/clean headphone out, too.

Panasonics are ok (crap sound quality though), but nothing beats a Sony if we're talking about portable units here. Cheap, reliable, great sound.

i remember a uc davis engineering prof had a webpage where he dissected sony and panasonic diskmen. panasonic has superior sound quality:) and very awesome sound quality for the price.

Once the slimmer power saving Panasonic cd players came out they started to sound pretty bad IMO, phillips are the best sound wise for normal cds. To bad you cant get the slimX, I just got one and it ROCKS. Where do you live? Maybe I can get one for you and ship it or something.

I've had the SL-SX500 for nearly five years now and couldn't have been happier with my purchase. Superb (true shake-that-mother) 40-sec. anti-shock protection, slick aluminum lid & metal buttons that reek of quality and included car adapter and rechargables drew me to it. Those batteries (still!) last an easy 11-12 hours w/anti-shock and the things recharge completely within an hour... and hey, it still plays all my CD-Rs just fine! Not bad for five-year old technology. :)

It took a lickin' being dragged along on numerous road trips, family camping trips and saw daily use in my first car. Not used much nowadays with the CD-changer in the new ride and all. With the new carrying case though, I just may bring it along on my person more often.

I'm trying to sell my "old" Sony discman, which is a great player. Was the thinnest when it came out, and the newest designs aren't slimmer by much. I believe it's the D-EJ915, but I'm not sure (I'm home right now, player's at school)...if you're interested, PM me, maybe we can work something out.

As for the Panny's, they're good players, but still a bit more of a "budget" player than the Sony's, which had much better sound quality. Plus, the Sony's just looked so nice...Panasonic took a few years to catch up to Sony just in terms of aesthetics.

I wouldn't trust anything made by Panasonic in the last few years. They used to be good in the past but now their products are junk. They are full of bugs and design flaws and must have been designed by monkeys.

I still have my Panasonic discman from 1992, when discmans first became popular... That thing doesnt even have anti-shock, and skips if you place it on the table too hard... but still works PERFECTLY...

pannies are not budget. the higher end pannies i got a few years ago were 150+ each. i followed this stuff for a while, i didn't see any asthetic advantage from sony. and the only sound quality tests i've seen favour panasonic.

Up until a few years ago Panasonic portables were tops in sound quality and build quality. The newer ones are pretty average though.

I also have a CT570 and it's still running great even after 3 years. Originally, I was going to get a Sony but after testing it out in the store it was a no brainer for the price I paid. Just too bad they don't make them anymore.
