I have a P2 system lying around. I bought it for like $30.00 and I thought I would be able to bear the slowness of the computer and use it for word processing and what not. However, I can't bear the slowness. It's unbearable to say the least.

What do you use your old school systems for?

I use a P1 as a router, and a K6 as an MP3 player. I have a K6-2 running Knoppix and a 350P2 running Win98 for spares. I gave my Athlon and Athlon XP setups to close family members as upgrades.

My oldest comp that's still alive is a 600mhz Celeron, I'm only 15 so I don't go back that far. I think I did own an older one before but I'm pretty sure something died when it popped and smoke started coming out when I was like 9. A friend of mine and I took it apart and it was all so confusing so we threw it out.

My work PC is a P2 400mhz that I had to upgrade myself from 128mb to 384mb of Ram. Sucks major.

How old are you? Why do you say "I thought I would be able to bear the slowness"? Tell us the specs of the machine before you start to b!tch. There are some situations where you could have a bad PII motherboard and it will run very slowly. I've had cases where some dell computers were lightning fast and some that took about 1 hour to boot. My mother's computer is like this where it gets abysmal memory scores=slowville. Despite putting a 1.4GHZ processor in her system, it's still not as fast as it should be. I also ran a dell D333 system which was painfully slow and I think got a memory score of 66MB/s....

Most PIIs should be able to run XP fairly quickly even with an old HDD, with a newer HDD and fast ram, it should be able to start windows XP with in 2 minutes..

What really sucks ass on them old systems is them old slow 5400RPM loud cluncky harddrives, and normally 128MB or below RAM, PC100 or PC133 of course.

I have a P III 866 that I use for similar tasks. It has 768mb of memory (3x256) though, and to be quite honest - is no slouch. It has my old Geforce3 4400 in it as well, and I can use it to play old games that aren't compatible with XP. I have it set up triple boot, Linux, XP, and 98

Starting Windows XP is not a problem. Opening programs, trying to browse the internet is where it crawls to a halt.

I had an old P2-350 system as a spare system in my office that I run some tracking/reporting applications on. I also slapped a TV tuner card in it and used it to have the TV running in the background. :D

I recently raided a supply closet where we keep a lot of our old servers and stole an old P3-600 Slot 1 to see if it would work with this mobo. Popped it in and it fired up. Still not blazing fast but quite a step up from a P2-350. Good thing it worked too because the thing is lodged in there so tightly now that I couldn't get it out.

I used an old PII system and smoothwall a few years ago when setting up internet access for the fraternity house I was living in at the time. Worked great. Turned on squid and all was good.

For fun I would sometimes block certian sites that I knew some people frequented. It was always good for a laugh when someone came up to me and said:

"Hey my internet doesn't work"
"Oh really?" <go to their computer, pull up espn, works fine,>
"what were you trying to go to?" Guy looks at the floor......
