I can't imagine there were even that many posting from a 486 when AT was new.

You're usin' a 286? Don't make me laugh
Your Windows boots up in what, a day and a half?
You could back up your whole hard drive on a floppy diskette
You're the biggest joke on the Internet

I could see using one as maybe a router... If you're posting from one, I would say you might need to check your local garbage dump to pick up a better machine! :D

You will find them in businesses where they act as servers running specialty software or in places where they perform very specific tasks...other than that you really are not going to find more than a few people using them for general computing.

I got my Packard Bell 486DX2 66.... Floating point unit, yah baby! YAHHHH!

I booted up Windows 3.11 for Workgroups on my old Packard Bell 386SX 16... and had a ISA 3com network card. It also ran Netscape 1.0 (anybody remember the pulsating N for the browsing animation?).... so yes, someone could be surfing on a 386.

I don't know about a 286, maybe with a text browser.

I have a 486-66 with 16 MB RAM sitting in a closet next to my 1995 Micron brand Pentium 1, 133 MHz, 32 MB RAM, 1.6 GB HD gaming system. It has a blazing ATI XPert@Play 3D card with 4 MB of RAM. The Micron cost something like $3,000.

Until Exult came out, I still used mine at home to run Ultima VII.

Now at work, there's a 486 laptop still used for some old Toshiba PLC programming. That's the thing where you can be dealing with systems 10-15 years old, you need to keep the equipment around to access them.

Computers used in outer space probably use 486 technology (or older) because the larger transistors are less vulnerable to soft errors (i.e. alpha and neutron particle strikes).

"Throbber" :p
I did surf and post a few places on a 386 and a 486... back when I was jealous of my friend's DX266. I only had an SX33 :(
But even the 486SX33 ran Wolf3d much more smoothly than any 386! :p

Even on a 486DX266 there were problems with Ultima VII... the guys were constantly hungry!

Haha, same here, an AMD 386DX-40 in fact. It ran X-Wing well. I remember playing Prince of Persia on my friend's 286.

Doom ran like crap on my machine though. My friend's father worked at Intel so he got his hands on a 486DX2-66. It was blazingly fast!

I ended up upgrading to 486DX4-100 later.

my mom still uses a 486 to word process. yes, we bought her a new core 2 duo laptop from dell with an 80GB HD and she just cant bring herself around to "get used to it."

We have a 286 sitting in the garage. nothing wrong with it, just no reason to use it. i had wing commander/ prince of persia, windows 3.0, all the good stuff :)
