Well?

Some of the most successful and brightest people I have ever heard of never went to college or didn't graduate.

Many people I have encountered throughtout my life who have degrees are ignorant morons who couldn't think their way out of a paper bag.

Somebody has to collect the trash and mop the floors just as somebody has to work in a research laboratory.

Does having a college degree necessarily guarantee you a better life, or does your own desire play a bigger role?

it is a combination of both. Having both is an ideal way to about it. Though you can certainly suceed in life without one, it is just a tad easier to doif you have it and you have the drive to put it to use.

When you look at people who have really good $100k+ jobs, probably almost all have college degrees.

When you look at millionaires, I bet its a different story. More millionaires are are C students than A and B students.

No.

To me, "successful" people are those who identify their passion and follow it very well. They also love themselves and know how to take care of themselves very well.

In terms of career, a "successful" person would do work that does not feel like work.

A "successful" student identifies his/her academic interest and pursues exactly that. Colleges and universities are ACADEMIC institutions, but so many people these days identify it with "career" and "success", which imo are pure BS.

I don't know, but I was fed with this bullsh*t by just about everyone around me, including my parents. I learned to not follow this "big lie" since I was in high school. Asking for advises from people on online newsgroups and mailing lists really helped.

It's what you make of college that allows you to become successful. Don't think about not going to college just because most of the people who did go made nothing of it. A person can go to school and never learn anything and come home the same way as he left. It's you that makes the difference in your life so I say go to college study your butt off and have fun at the same time. It is a fact that people with college degrees usually make about double than just a high school diploma (so says my teacher).

Lie? Hmm.... I'd think that it would be more common for someone with a formal education to monetarily successful than Joe Shmoe No Diploma.

perhaps not, but forcing a large amount of people to learn extra history, philosphy, literature etc can't be bad:) course i'm thinking of the classical aspect of education:p then theres the technical school like part where you pop out engineers and stuff:)

generally more people are likely to succeed after going to college. if you have statistics showing different then i dunno

It all depends on the person. My brother makes 6 figures, and he never went to college. He was in the Marines though.

It also depends on what your major is/was. An example of "what not to major in" is from the ex-girlfriend of a friend of mine. She majored in Russian eduacation, in Pennsylvania. She was the only person in the whole school with that major, and I think they did away with the program. Now there's a major that won't get you anywhere.

Everybody I know that is successful with a good job, and they got that job within the last 10 years or so, they went to college. 20 years or so ago, it was possible to get a great job even if you barely finished high school.

I'm wondering how I'll be. I'll have an engineering degree, but I'm not an A student. Maybe when I graduate the universe will implode.

I just don't believe that half the people who go to college need to. They are just putting off the decision to choose a career path. These people should be going to legitimate trade schools that could teach them something that they could use to earn a decent living for the rest of their lives.

Universities started the lie of course. Ambition is what you need to be successful, not college. Ambitious people tend to go to college though, so it sort of skews the cause and effect.

A lot of people are misinformed.

For instance, I don't understand those people who absolutely despise programming, yet they take CS and b!tch about it day and night.

Of all my close friends (close enough so I understand what they like and don't like), only one or two are suitable for CS. One of the guys absolutely loves programming and spends nights coding up encyption mechanisms, etc. Sadly enough, I know at least 10 friends who are in CS and don't like it - and some of them just take it for the hell of it and believe that they'll find "good paying" jobs when they graduate.

I personally don't like the CS program at my school so I stayed away from it. I do plan to take some courses that appeal to me, though.

But, if it was possible for EVERYONE to go to college, would it be beneficial for all of them and society?

Umm.. check South Korea.

Last time I checked, 40% or so of the new working generation had degrees (or something like that).

In an ideal society (the way I see it), high school education should be improved. Colleges should be for those who want to pursue further academic interests in a specific area they want.

maybe i'm biased because i already have a few degrees and believe in education, but i think for me it's not only about having a piece of paper. it's knowing that i saw something through, finished what i started. to me, that's success.

It's the law of averages. Of course your own desire plays a larger role than an education; that being said, there are morons in any facet of life, and people who won't be successful no matter how much training they go through. Success isn't necessarily implied by income - with an understanding of that, you can realize that you don't need anything besides desire and a modicum of intelligence (but mainly persistence) to succeed in this world. An education, however, helps.

College degree is not necessary...I know tons of people that make as much as people with colelge degrees without one. What I've seen most is theres a traditional way to do things and theres a nontraditional way to do things. Traditionally, if you go get good grades in a profession such as engineering you'll get a 50-60k job and eventually work your way up to 100k. Now, I know a bunch of people who buy real estate who have never been to college and make more than these college graduates. Theres tons of ways to make money and enjoy your life. Everyones always like get good grades go to a good school get a good job...sure...thats all fine...but most of the people who make millions start their own businesses...they do their own thing...they're good at what they do...they don't go the traditional route
