Who Snagged a HD 7970 Last Night?

I like shiny things so I ordered 2 XFX Black Editions to replace my MSI R6970 Lightnings.

Grabbed one Sapphire. Plan on getting an Eyefinity 6 model, or any non-reference that comes out with at least 3 m-DP ports to avoid tearing on a 3x120Hz setup that will also get completed at that time. Figure by then either Crossfire will be working better via drivers (foolish as that might be).

I managed to snag one Asus from newegg this morning, when everything was OOS. I set page monitor plugin for "hd 7970" search page monitoring, and around 10AM got an updated page notification. Guess it was only 1 that came back in stock, because literally after 15 seconds it took me to complete the order, it was OOS again.

I thought about it, but then I saw the BF3 benchmarks and its not much better than my 560 ti 2gb sli setup which I only paid about $400 for. Actually it looks like my sli was faster in what I needed in BF3 then the 7970, but I did think about it 🙂

Not everyone is willing to wait months for something we know nothing about.

I'm going to just stop now before this turns into yet another thread crap & derailment.

Understood and noted, but I think that is the exact reason to wait. Wait 3 months (half the time) and if nothing noteworthy surfaces you buy, spend less (than you would have) and don't face the early adopter driver woes.

But I'll leave it at that.

The $600 sapphire on amazon that says "Get it Tuesday December 10 if you order withing the next 4 hours" is testing my will power...

Must wait for aftermarket...cooling.... *mouse hovers over add to cart*

Those were going for $600 on newegg when I checked last night. $1200 for two video cards? I thought I was bat-$ht insane for dropping $380 on the 5870 when it first came out. How does one justify this purchase? GCN for computing? 3-6 monitor setup? I'm not judging, I genuinely want to know (so I can use it on my wife 😉).

Just got an email, AMD PR is sending me a 7970 overnight FedEx for my blog review.

😛 I jest. You guys are all making me fairly jealous, though. If you're listening, omnipotent AMD, I will change my sig to reflect your sponsorship if you send me a card. No problem 😉

I am anxious to see what kind of PPD these pull, so those of you with GCN please stay on the lookout for a new F@H client 🙂

1. It's my birthday
2. I had funds sitting in paypal account from one of my 580 Lightning sale, doing nothing, waiting for kepler.
3. Did I mention it is my birthday today? (and missus didn't even say a word)

Happy birthday!

I'm curious to see how many who voted in the poll a couple days ago actually bought one (or more). I know lava, jackstar, and a couple others got their hands on some. I don't think all 49 who voted yes even tried, though. A lot are waiting for non-reference cards too...

I sold my Lightnings for $500, going to sell my Ipad first gen 3g for around $375, have $150 in giftcards. Overall outlay not bad at all.

I always buy top of the line when new cards come out so I can maximize my return when I sell them to upgrade again. I'll probably go with 2x kepler when they come out in 6 months and sell my 7970s.

Ha, my birthday is mid-February right around the time Pitcairn is expected. If the 7870 doesn't leave the 6970 in the dust, I'll be getting a 6950 to unlock shaders/flash-to-6970 having 99% of the 7870 performance for nearly $100 less. 7870 = $300, 2GB $6950 should be ~$200 or less AR by then since they are $220 now (link) and the release of the 7800 series.

Thanks!

I didn't vote because I wasn't even sure I want new VC. I'm coming off a 580 Lightning. I guess all that excitement about new 28nm tech coupled with "it's my BDay, for crying out loud" thoughts got the best of me  I'm such an impulse buyer. Now I can't wait until i get my hands on it.

Just grabbed a Sapphire from Newegg not 10 minutes ago. They seem to have Sapphires and Diamonds in stock for those of you still looking to buy.

Not exactly selling like hotcakes. Not looking good for amd.

You know this derail is a thread-crap and inflammatory. OP didn't ask. If you want to start a thread for this, and you've been here long enough to know it wasn't the place for it.
