Huh, I always thought it was originally Dillon's song. Guess not. After digging, I believe it was written by a guy named Jerry Jeff Walker, who ever the heck that is.

Jerry Jeff Walker is one of those musical gypsies that everyone inside the industry know and few people outside. He's a buddy of Jimmy Buffet and Willie Nelson, if that gives a clue to the lifestyle. Heres a link:

Mr. Bojangles was written by Jerry Jeff Walker. Two sites claim the first recorded version. BobDylan.com says he made the first recording in 1973, but HarryNilsson.com says he did it in 1969.

I bet you can do the math.

Of course, Jerry Jeff Walker recorded his own tune in 1968 before anyone else.
