LOL and ROFL (originally ROTFL) have been around for a long time. At least since the early days of AOL's growth. I think LMAO is a little younger, but has also been around for quite awhile.

Really strange that you posted this, I was just thinking about it yesterday morning.

If you were the first to post one of these expressions (i.e. in early BBS days), you basically added to a commonly used language now.

GG was started in the early days of counterstrike and quake - after a game was over the combatants would say "GG" an abbreviation for good game. That puts it at the late 1990s.

LOL, ROTFL, AFK were all started in AOL chat rooms most likely. That would be like late 80s early 90s most likely.

SWAG has been used for a lot longer than the rest... if that's what you are getting at.

Yes and no.

GG actually started before counterstrike and quake. It started in text based games. The first time I encoutered it was in '95 - '96 in Muds and Muxes, but I suspect it was around long before that.

Likewise, I first encountered LOL in 93 (ish), in online unix based messaging and chatrooms.

According to Wikipedia, the first 'MUD' (on BBS systems) was online in the late 70's early 80's. I would expect that if you were able to talk to them, you'd find it started there.

YOLO was Drake in the song "The Motto"

Not even close. The Strokes have an earlier claim to the phrase, and there's someone before them that I can't remember.

I can't remember who it is, because the whole thing is irrelevant, because the phrase is fucking stupid.

I remember seeing GG's at the end of Warcraft II or Command and Conquer games on Kali in like 95/96. Also during the Quake Demo before Quake came out.

I'm prety sure most of these silly acronyms predate internet gaming and trace back to BBSes in the 80s.
