Who qualifies as being Asian?

Recently I have encountered some Indians from India. They were offended when someone called them Asians. I also remember once I met a Filipino girl and she told me that she is Pacific Islander and not Asian.

Now this got me confused. I thought people from the continent of Asia are called Asians. So now I am wondering who qualifies as being Asian?

If you or your family is from Asia that seems to qualify someone as Asian. Keep in mind that Turkey, Russia and the entire middle east is in Asia.

Although, asian usually refers to east asians that comes from oriental descent, such as chinese, korean, japanese, taiwanese.

Asian = People from Asia minus Indian minus Middle east minus Russia.

Philipino = Asian. Why would you want to distinguish yourself to become "Pacific Islander." That's like saying white trash people wanting to be called "white trash" or "redneck" instead of caucasian or just "white."

As a oriental, I do not see why us orientals get the monopoly on the term Asian. Makes no sense.

Taiwan, Japan, Indonesia...they've all got islands in the Pacific. Filipinos are much more entrenched culturally into SE Asia than they are w/Samoans, Hawaiians, Tahitians, etc.

If you see her again, tell her she's stupid and that I sent you.

Isn't that all the more reason to distinct all those people?

Sure technically Indians may be asian, but you don't call a white person from Africa African, or a Canadian person American because Canada is in America.

I don't know. I typed like that about 6 years ago, when I was 11. My theory is that every asian american goes through the whole pseudo-nationalism stage once in their life. It's just that some of them don't get out of it until it's too late. Unfortunately, dIs stYlE uB tYpInG iSh no real indication of intelligence or wealth since I've seen people who went to Berkely type like that.

In England, if you say "Asian" it means someone who is Indian or Pakistani. Chinese people are known as "orientals".

Here in America, orientals have monopolized the term "Asian" for themselves, and in fact insist that the word "oriental" is racist. :roll:
