Who owns a laptop, for the sake of having one, but doesnt really need it? :)

My current laptop, a toshiba pent m 1.5 ghz, is a computer I've owned for 1.5 years. I got it for messing around on, writing papers anywhere, watching movies anywhere, etc.

And now that I'm out of college, frankly I dont use it that much! I dont really have internet at home right now either, (except on my parents computer which I am posting from) so Its not like i'm using the WiFi abilities on this thing either.

I ponder selling it before it loses all of its value, but i wouldnt want to sell it, only to want to buy another later down the road. (which i probably woudlnt need.)

buy a wireless router? they're like $40 (unless you're on dial-up)

I bought a laptop 5 years ago and do use it as a desktop machine mostly in conjunction now with a dedicated desktop. It is still nice to have the ability to roam with a computer when travelling, even around the house.

Don't sell it, for email, web, word, etc.. applications it'll serve you well for probably another 8 years.

Me. I generally only use the laptop when we're on vacation. My desktop is much more convenient to use and faster. HOWEVER, the laptop did come in handy earlier this year, when I "rebuilt" the desktop, and was without it for a couple of weeks waiting for parts etc.

I have a pocket PC I don't really need if that counts, all I use it for is browsing porn and talking on MSN when I can't be bothered getting off the couch.

I rarely use my laptop now but have got plenty of use in the past. I got it for work b/c I was on the road a few times a year, and because I lived with roommates in several large places where my PC was upstairs in the bedroom. I have changed jobs and now live alone in a 1BDR with a 26" LCD as my main monitor so the laptop rarely gets used.

Yeah the laptop also came in handy when my mobo died last fall in the main box and I didn't have to replace it immediately.

i dont want to have internet on my laptop, which is why I am not going to hook a router upstairs by my parents comp, lol. I'm on the internet enough as it is, from using their machine. if i had my own machine connected to the net i'd be on it all the time.

I have my desktops for doing applications, games, etc. i have a couple good desktops sitting around which do me well.

that is why i am in this dillema. if only i hadnt bought this thing, lol.

i use mine on the docking station as my primary computer. it never leaves the docking station... ever since i put all my personal info on it, i've been reluctant to take it anywhere where it will be out of my sight. really defeats the purpose of having a laptop.

Count me in this group. I bought a laptop when I started sales at my current job. I thought I would need it, but turns out I never used it. Couple that with the fact that I no longer do sales but production work, and it sits in it's carrying case most of the time. I only use it occassionally when I want to surf the internet while watching TV, but even nowadays that's impossible until I reinstall XP over the borked Vista install on it now.

I do  Come in handy when I want to show people photos though, and it saved my butt more than once while I was in school and my desktop decided to take a crap :p

I'm sure it could be done, if you are willing to back up all your data first :)

The ASUS PocketPC I got does everything I need while traveling. I see no reason to get a laptop.

I did buy one though. An iBook. Kept it for one day.
But thats a long story. Will do a search for all the threads I discussed it in and post them later.
EDIT: Nevermind. The search function is sucking again.
I believe that makes 4 months now.

what were the main things that were wrong with the ibook?

its consider the PocketPC idea, but the small screen would really bother me.;

I just bought one i totally don't need.

At werk they were clearing out some olders models @ insane prices, & i love deals :(
I couldn't resist.

Got an HP dv1440ca for ~ $475 CND :D

Pentium M 750 (1.86 GHz)
1 GB RAM
100 GB 4200RPM HDD
DVD-/+RW/DL
Wireless B/G
Intel integrated crap graphics (don't really care; even not be able to do Vista's glass GUI doesn't really matter, since this notebook is merely a toy for me)
12-cell battery (supposedly 5 hrs+ of battery life, though i don't think it does that unless it's sleeping part of the time :p)
14" 1280x768 display w/ TruBrite (yay for the glossy finish i love!)

Anyway, i threw Vista on it, & well, that's about all i've used it for thus far in the couple weeks i've had it :p
