For those that watched the movie Akira, who or what is Akira?

Is it some mysterious force that gives people great powers of destruction?

I never understood the entire thing either but then again I hated the movie from the second it began. Perhaps someone can shed some light on it for you.

Its about a boy and his dog and the country side. The dog gets rabies and the boy kills the dog.

Maybe that was a different plot line.. hrm.

Akira is about a groups of guys, then one guy meets up with some kid. That guy, gets detained and is "treated" in a specific way for the military. He busts out, finds the source of his power and funny things ensue.

Akira is the name of the first test subject, that showed the tremendous mental abilities. In the army's experiments something happened and he lost control of his abilities, hence the silent explosion that wipes out tokyo.

Like Lebowski said, Akira was the name of the first test subject. Throughout the movie, Akira comes to represent the inner potential of human beings. The potential for controlling the environment in which they exist. Hence the army wanted to try and harness this potential as a weapon. Unfortunately for them, the potential seems only to exist in children or teenagers who do not quite have the mental capacity to deal with their new found powers. That's sorta the gist of it - or at least what I got out of it. I would say more, but I havent seen it in a while (although now I want to).
