Who needs a computer to be a computer gamer?

I recently noticed that over a few days I was reading several of the five computer gaming magazines I subscribe to; reading various gaming web sites; shopping for games, looking for discounts and reading reviews; reading articles on game 'industry issues'; reading game manuals on things like where to put points for MMORPG charaters; catching "gamer.tv" on cable; and dealing with hardware issues from trying to improve a system to shopping for parts.

What I did not do during these days is actually play computer games.

I realized that I'd gotten to the point that I don't actually have to play to have a major hobby of computer gaming. The few hours spent on raid night in World of Warcraft paled to the other activities. It hit me what an odd, excessive hobby it can become, when the actual 'pleasure' you spend so much time arranging becomes secondary.

I've heard of Audiophiles having the same sort of problem, where constantly upgrading and tweaking for slightly better displays or sound replaces enjoying listening much.

Just an observation.:)

Yeh, For some people their computer gaming hobby actually just involves not playing.

My friend recently bought a 7950 and the only game he plays is Counterstrike 1.6.

Or when I used to play magic the gathering as a kid and spent most of my time sorting and arranging my magic cards in the binder.
