Who needs 3rd gear anyways

not sure if it was a matter of time, but my trans finally gave out. took out 3rd gear last night. just doing a little 30-50 mph and she gave way. a nice bang, some pretty decent shuttering. I had a little bit of a 3rd this morning, but eventually 3rd was nowhere to be found.

350z boosted with APS twin turbos
this was @ ~12psi, so maybe 450 whp.

my mechanic thinks we will rebuild, but I got it up on my hoist and I have a CD008 revision trans, while they have a newer cd009 availalbe. the 009 is supposed to be better -> better syncros and stronger gears. looking at 1700 + shipping ..... could have done without this right now. modified cars are only fun when they aren't broke and I felt like I had the darn thing dialed in.

going to see if I can find a decent used one, but leaning towards new.
 
Stop ricer driving it and it won't break.

I am a ricer at heart. honestly though, I'm easy on my cars. it broke in the middle of pulling through the gear. not like I was powershifting/slamming gears.


Vehicle not designed for that much horsepower. Expect more things to break.

not many breaking trans; even with more power than I am making. I did expect at some point it might not hold up, but lately I have been pretty easy on the car. basically just back and forth from the gym.


that's very reasonable for a replacement trans. Sounds like a simple choice.


it does, but still more money than I have right now. car may sit for a bit. pulling the trans today. want to make sure there isn't an issue with my clutch, that would double the bill

Sucks about your tranny ziv. At your power levels a cd008 should be strong enough and can be gotten for as little as 600. You could save your cash and drop in the repalcemt quick and slowly rebuild your original with the good stuff!

No worries... I'm a dick most of the time. besides, it's only a 350z, they made 10's of thousands of them and they are common place regardless how they are setup. kind of like a mustang is a mustang is a mustang.... or a vette is a vette is a vette. HA

I have been trying to determine the major differences. some say the 009 only has triple cone synchros on a few more gears, then I find other info saying stronger gears? My brother works for a shop and they have access to a decent network of used parts. He seems to think he can find me a sub 30k mile 009 for 500 or less. that would be the way to go. The trans is easy to pull, so labor isn't a major factor in my decision. if it were, I'd suck it up and find a way to buy the new trans tomorrow.

you think the 008 is worth the rebuild? I have a very good parts girl at a local dealership. she is going to look into parts for me. that said, I don't hear of people rebuilding these trans. maybe it goes along with a couple things:
1.) the early revision trans in the 2003 were known to have issues, so when they did go, they were upgraded to the 009 revision and not rebuilt

2.) the 009 revision trans don't break (very often), so no need to rebuild


The forum guys advise me to go with a new 009 and call it a day. I literally 'just' bought a stoptech kit for my evo with money I barely had. took delivery on tuesday and the trans broke friday night. I kind of 'need' the brakes, but I 'need' the trans more... we'll see how things play out. 1700+ shipping is reasonable, but when money is tight, any price is hard to pay.

Your probably right about just getting a CD009. The 8s are strong as frack though and two 350Zs we put together in the last few years with similar power all have held up on good meat.

I was going to use a Cd008 on my ls1 swap now that you can cut off the housing on them and use a plate to mate it up to a ls engine. Guy I know has one behind a 1Uz and it takes a beating.

I need to stop getting pissed when people call clean shit ricer. Im just a hater baiter I guess....

not sure it's worth it. my brother got back to me and said there are a lot of used ones around 400-600 bucks with 1 yr replacement warranty. I told him I wanted CD009 with 30k or less miles, said with lower miles I am looking at closer to 600.

I have had fun with it, but when I think I am hard on stuff, it's how people drive their cars daily.

We pulled the trans out and the clutch is fine (that's a positive).

Heh pretty sure I drove like 2K miles without second gear in my A4 in college.
 
new to me trans got here today. nice thing about the Z, they made 10's of thousands of them. Lots of used parts available.

Got a CD009 with less than 40k on it for 500 bucks. Just waiting on a new throw out bearing. I'll have it back together by the weekend.
