who makes the mechanisms for CompUSA brand hard drives?

My experience is that it can vary from unit to unit. My DVD drive was a solid Toshiba. The label on the drive is even Toshiba, no mention of CompUSA. But newer DVD drives have been something different. It could very well be that a 40GB drive is a Maxtor, but a 80GB is a WD or something.

It's either Maxtor Or WD. They used to use Quantum, till they were sold to Maxtor. I've never heard anything other than those used with CompUSA drives

They're all Maxtor, it even says "by Maxtor" on the box. Some of them may have been Quantums after the merger.

So if they're all maxtors, how can the Compusa-badged drives sell for so much cheaper than the regular Maxtor drives? An Example:

Compusa 60GB/7200RPM: 99.99 (w/$30 rebate, so usually $129.99)

Maxtor 60GB/7200RPM: 159.99

Only difference I saw between the two was the name: Compusa drive says Diamond Max, while the Maxtor drive says Diamond Max Plus. This would lead me to believe (If I remeber correctly how the naming scheme goes) that the CompUSA drive is a 5400RPM model. Is this correct or is it something else?

Nate

CompUSA drives have less cache, 512KB vs 2MB I believe, I'm not sure of any other differences. They sell both 5400 and 7200RPM Maxtor drives under their own name.

CompUSA branded Maxtors' also have 1-year warranties instead of the usual 3-year. This alone would make me steer clear of the CompUSA drives (unless price is REALLY important and I'm desperate).
