Who makes the better HD: WD, Seagate, Hitachi or Samsung

I'm looking to add another HD to my system and have seen good deals on Samsung and Hitachi HDs. I normally use WD or Seagate because of their reliability. How does Samsung and Hitachi measure up to WD and Seagate?

And, these things can be very cyclical and subjective. No one stays on top forever - today I like Seagate because of their 5 year warranty, and they work well. I have had good luck with Hitachi and Fujitsu. The only failure I ever had was WD, but that was about 6 years ago.

And, as Trinitron says, there have been many threads here over the past month just dealing with the same question.

I have WD HDDs, Seagates, & just added a Samsung to the fold a bit ago.

I'd say they all make excellent hard drives...the choice is really up to you as to which you want.

I've never had a hd fail on me. Maxtor, Seagate, WD, and Hitachi are the brands I've used. I've seen more WD hd's fail than any other brand, but it's only been a few, and probably because it's the predominant brand of the people I know 😕

I can only offer a bump by echoing what others have said. If you have trouble deciding, just go with the one that you like best for whatever reason. Seagate gets the nod most of the time but so do WD and others. Most people loath Maxtor, but I've had Maxtors since back in the day when 540 Meg drives were king and I don't remember the last time I had one die on me. Seagates? I'm 3 out of 6 on Seagates with the 3 all going Tango Uniform within 12 months. They are quiet and snappy but I'm no longer a fan of their drives. Customer service was top notch though! Couldn't have asked for better service on RMAs. They were great when I needed help.

For low noise I like Samsung, Seagate, and currently my 1 month old WD 320g SATA. I haven't done any benchmarks but I can feel more zip with the WD over the Samsung and I never hear it unless the room is dead silent.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Just find the features you want and go for it. Although I've never owned one, I do remember hearing quite a few complaints about maxtor. Storage Review is an excellent source for researching hard drives.

not one drive has failed on me, and i've used WD, Seagate, Samsung, Maxtor, even the ancient Quantum and IBM Deskstar i have still works, only they are freakishly loud! one of my WD fell off a desk table and it still worked, although with a loud clicking noise...lol. imo its all about personal preference 🙂
