My vote (without question) goes to Vito's in Hoboken, NJ. It is widely regarded as the best Italian deli in a town widely regarded for its Italian delis. The other main local contender is Lisa's.

The best sandwich? My favorite is the Prosciutto, Mutz and sun-dried tomato hero. The key is the best mozzarella cheese you can get anywhere.

mmmmm, Vito's...

Other notables:

Lee's Hoagie House (Phila., PA) - Cheeseburger Hoagie
Firehouse Deli (Fairfield, CT) - Roast Turkey, Stuffing and Cranberry Sauce Sandwich

<< Lee's Hoagie House (Phila., PA) >>

The one near Trenton was good. Too bad it closed.

I'm actually currently living it what has to be the hoagie joint capital of the world.
I'd have to say the winner is:

Mastricola's (Conshohocken, PA). Their roast pork italiano is brilliant, and their homemade hot sausage is great. They make a cold sandwich called the Zep which is a hard italian roll with Salami, Provolone, onions, olive oil and Italian spices. Very tasty. Lenny also makes great shooters. Their cheesesteaks are OK, but I like Boccella's and Hoagie Haven better.

Best Cheesesteaks come from Hoagie Haven (Princeton, NJ).
Best hoagies goes to Gaetano's (Willingboro/Edgewater Park, NJ).
Best pizza: Franzone's (Conshy, PA)

The SackO'Subs chain in the Atlantic City/Ocean City NJ area are also good (and cheap, too).

The Lee's Hoagie House I used to go to was in West Philadelphia near UPenn's campus.

I have been to Hoagie Haven and can attest to their hoagie goodness. :D

Boom Boom's in Vero Beach. Other than that Subs N Such here in Tampa. They have the largest selection of sodas I have ever seen.

<< Best sandwich:

Blimpie's in NYC, followed by 75% of local delis in NYC...
>>

Did you know the original Blimpie's was in Hoboken? It just closed (and reopened in a new location). It pales next to Vito's.

Meja - you sandwich sounds pretty good. I would ass some bacon to make it even better. :D

Pat's and Geno's is for tourists.
Unless it's 3AM
and you're drunk.
And it's a holiday.

Edit:
Oh and don't forget the Primanti Brothers in Pittsburgh--sandwiches that come stacked with cole slaw and fries.

Geno's is not for tourists. Geno's is for jackasses who don't know any better. Pat's is like Mecca for any true Philadelphian. You have to go there. For me, anytime is a good time - but then I LOVE grease.

While I agree with you that Pat's is better than Geno's, both are "tourist traps" and the steaks just ain't that great. They make huge batches all at once and they sit on the grill for long periods of time. They end up getting stringy and somewhat tough. There are many far better steaks to be found throughout South Philly. Ask any good Italian boy from down there and they'll give you some places that blow Pat's and Geno's out of the water.

[l]http://www.psych.upenn.edu/~mims/FUNNY/philaphunny.html[/l] speaks the truth.

I'd also like to nominate Town Pizza in Wrentham, MA for sweet Steak Bombs
and Sammy's in P-Burg, NJ for the best Cheesesteak in warren county.

Anyway in SoCal one of the best sandwich places is Busy Bee's in San Pedro (it's like at 26th, block south of Patton). TREMENDOUS BBQ sandwiches. Always crowded but worth it. Ooohhhhh *drool*

This little deli in By George here at the UW... mmmm, sourdough with mayo, lettuce, cheddar, mozzarella, and smoked turkey... mmmmm....

What's even better is skipping part of one of my lectures to get a sandwich, then walking in 15 minutes late and eating it in the front row... mmm...
