I'm looking to get a 250-300w for one that recently 'exploded.' I heard Sparkle makes good ones. Anyone have any ideas? Low noise also helps. Thanks in advance.

I've heard the exact opposite about Sparkle PSU's, Lots of people recommend Enermax and Antec.

Sparkles are good, but the few i've heard were loud as all hell. My Antec is good and quite.

I think Enermax remains the most highly regarded of PC PS's. Antec comes in 2nd, from what I've observed.

What I can say is : Antec are very impressive 250W PSU or 300+W are useless...

Look at my rigs. My SCSI one has 2 7200RPM HDD, 1 10K rpm HDD, 1 CDRW, 1 CD-Rom, 3 case fan, a 7000RPM delta fan, 2 SCSI adapter, a PIII850, etc. And my PSU is still very stable ! Ill try to had another 7200RPM drive real soon and I guess it will works...

In my other computer, I have a no-name mid-range 300W PSU that is capable to run 4 IDE 7200RPM and a 5400 IDE RPM with a GeForce 256 and a PIII700 sloket, 3 case fan, 1 PCI fan...

But actually I would buy an Enermax because of the dual fan setup...but I still think Antec PSU are very strong one...and maybe no-brand PSU are still good enough for most user...

Anyway, I hope it help you.

Although not as well known, PC Power and Cooling supposedly makes some of the best if not the best power supplies. Be prepared to pay a premiun though.

Ditto. Antec or Enermax. For a non-power user (i.e. grandma), a simple and cheap Deer PS works fine, but the Antec doesn't really cost all that much more, so why cut corners if it's your personal system?

I have a Sparkle with "noise killer", and I'm real happy with it. It's quite quiet.

Last time I checked PC Power and Cooling used Sparkle for most of the PSUs. I have one and it's been great. 300W Sparkle driving 2 40GB drives, CD-RW Plex 16x, 50X CD-ROM, DVD, ZIP, 1.1GHz T-Bird, tons and tons of fans.. pretty damn stable for 300W.

I strongly recommend Sparkle. I have been using them for years and have not had any problems. I would also like to say that I personally have NOT had good experiences with Enermax. My fathers system at work has an Enermax power supply and one of the fans died (and it is a ball bearing fan). I should also note that the PS was only a year and a half old.

Please don't flame me. Those are my experiences and mine alone.

I have seen no actually comparative reviews of power supplies.

As a 'general rule'

Antec users: Love Antecs
Enermax users: Love Enermaxes
Sparkle users: Love Sparkles

These are 3 of the best Power supply makers out there, all are good. Realistically 99% of computer users have absolutely no problems with generic PSUs, buying one of these is just for a little more peace of mind. I wouldnt hesistate to put any of these in a system i was building

I also like Powman PSUs, but i know they arent so loved here.

I've only had experiences with enermax... and everyone I've recommended the enermax to has loved it. but any of the 3 recommended brands are very good for the high end home user who doesn't want to spend $200 on a PSU.

btw, I really love enermax's dual fan setup with the whispaer fan control and stuff... makes the computer ULTRA quiet!

Im surprised that no one has mentioned Enlight, one of the few AMD recommended PSUs, they're very good quality, too bad its kind of hard to find them selling separated from their cases. Antecs are alright, I really dont think they're the best out there, the fan of my Antec 250W started making noises after a year of use, and later the fan died. While my Enlight 250W still works well. My personal favorite is Enermax, their quality is unmatched.

Just so you know. Powerman and Fortron Source power supplies are made by Sparkle.
