If Panasonic are better for durability than Sony, go for it. Personally, I've abused my old one (old black square Discman), and my current one (MP3-CD Walkman) has many scratches and has survived, w/o skipping, mind you, several tumbles onto concrete floors.
...to be fair, neither were under $100.
I would advise against RCA and Koss, however (but Koss headphones rock).
I just sent a CD player back to Sony because it stopped working 2 years after I bought it. I don't expect anything back but it made me feel better. I addressed it to the CEO of Sony Corporation of America and wrote on the outside of the package, HANDLE WITH CARE, CRAPPY CD PLAYER ENCLOSED. My old Philips CD player from like 6 years ago still works fine.
Yes. I have the original Rio Volt (rebadged Iriver) and the thing is like a tank "takes a licking and keeps on ticking" and I love the MP3 capability (it's all I use).
