You are going to get a million different opinions on this subject. It really comes down to personal experience. Some people swear by a certain brand. Others will have horror stories about that same manufacturer.

Right now I think Seagate drives offer the best investment. 5 year warranty. They are supposedly quiet as well.

I use WD drives myself, though. Never had one problem.

I prefer Seagate. Fast, yet also super quiet. Some other brands are also moving up in the quiet hard drive area. Hitachi and Samsung I think.

I hate WD because they are so frickin loud!

I personally love Seagate, Quantum and Samsung. I have 6 HDs in my system and 4 are seagate ATA/100, 1 is a WD ATA/133 and the other is a Maxtor 250gb SATA. I always hated maxtor but I got a good price for it so I am giving it a chance. Running 5 months great now but the Seagates rock. In HD tests the seagates come VERY close to the SATA benches. The quantum drives I use (18 U160 SCA) have been in use for years and not one has ever given me a problem. They are all SCSi of course.:)

I've used Seagate, Quantum (now Maxtor), Maxtor, and Western Digital. I had problems with Seagates back in 1998 when they bought and rebadged Conner drives, that were crap. I had whole lots that failed manufacturing testing. More recent Seagate drives in home systems have been quiet and reliable. I had very few problems with Quantum drives when I used them in manufacturing for a medical imaging vendor and had to support them, 1 or 2 failures within 2 years out of 110 drives. I had a few more Maxtors go up, 6 or 7 out of about 60 drives, but these machines were used as workstations, many 24/7 in hospitals. I've used a few Western Digital drives, about 5 and never had any problems with them. Right now Seagate gives you the 5 years warranty which I believe makes them the vendor of choice.

Hitachi :)
Seagate and WD are fine though.
Maxtor only if they're really dirt cheap

seagate because they are superior in performance, quietness, and reliability then many/most other brands.

I find it ironic so many prefer seagate, but seagate is the only drive I have personally had die on me. I have a WD Raptor now, and I love it. Western Digtital has always been good to me.

I love my Seagtes. Have had problems with 1 WD caviar, and 2 Maxtors. Of course I just got my Seagates over a year ago. Usually bought Maxtors but when the two crapped out on me I said no more. Good RMA service though. (If thats what you're really looking for in a HD manufacturer:roll: )

Funny this question should come up right now. I just replaced my friends *DEAD* 40GB Western Digital (manufactured April 2002) with an 80GB Seagate not more than an hour ago. I also replaced my brothers *DEAD* Western Digital about a year and a half ago which also died after about 2 years of use. I never really liked WD, and these and other experiences have really turned me off from them.

My favorite is Seagate. I've also used and like Maxtor and IBM. Haven't used Hitachi or Samsung drives, but I have heard good things about them.

I have an 8 or 9 year old Diamond Maxtor still running.

Western Digital drives havent let me down yet and ive used them for ~2 years now. I have an old 420mb whihc I think is a Seagate still kicking around.

I have never had an HDD die on me (touches all the wood he can find). The only drives Ive heard of my mates losing are IBM's.
