I use a JanSport for my everyday stuff. I've had it since high school. It's got two large compartments, which is very, very useful. It's held up pretty well over the years, except for one of the straps ripping (and re-ripping) due to wearing it on one shoulder for years (I don't do that anymore). I'm actually looking for a new one, but I'm having a hard time finding one of their new models that matches this one.

I have an REI now and it's just showing it's age. I've been carrying a full load (2000 pages of books + laptop + binder + spirals + accessories) for over 18 months (walking 2 miles a day), took it everywhere from the beach to ATVing through the jungles of Cozumel and I think it's just worn out.

I need an extremely, extremely durable backpack. I cannot use a messenger bag since I carry far too much with me to comfortably carry in such a bag.

Your opinions please!

Geez that's a lot of crap to carry around. Is it all really necessary?

Considering I commute to class, yea, it's necessary. I have about 13 books for 5 classes now, my english anthology is two volumes of 900 pages each, I have a 600 page government book, and most of my engineering books are about ~500 pages or so, although the paper is much thicker.

I need my laptop obviously

Heh. I guess your classes just require more. My engineering classes usually require a pad of paper and pencil:p

Well I don't use the books in class, but I have to do homework while I am on campus. I have far too much work to do it solelyat night.

i think north face comes w/ a lifetime warranty too. (I've had at least 3 or 4 jansports where the zippers stopped working, but to be fair I've never sent 'em in cuz i thought itd be too much of a hassle =/ )

oh, and i forgot to mention, I've been using a North Face bag everyday for school since this past Sept. and it's showed no signs of wear & tear yet, even w/ my commute.

Going on 7 years for mine now :) Well worth the 45 dollars that I thought I was screwed into paying at Lazurus. (Only place that had decent backpacks in the middle of the school year when I needed a new one :( )
