It's been super hot here lately and I've been wanting to pick up a air con unit for the house. What would be the best brand?

I want it to be super cold, and when I say cold, I want it to be freezing my arse off cold.

Also if you guys know how much more per month I'll have to pay for electricity, let me in on that one too. I plan to run it only at night while I sleep, and maybe sometimes during the afternoon when the peak times of hotness comes out.

Ahh, ok, thank you very much. I now know not to go with Emerson. How about Panasonic? I've seen some decent ones around here. Hmm, anyone else have any opinions?

i can tell you how much it would cost for my house. i have 2700 sq feet, 10 ft high ceilings. An energy efficient unit here would cost me 60 cents per minute to get a comfortable temp (avg). Of course in CA electricity is expensive.

Window units are just expensive to run. If you're talking a central a/c unit, I think trane is the best.

Hmmm, in all the apartments/condos I used to live in, they all used FEDDERS or something like that. Lasted for a long time and great machines. But central air is the way to go...

a 5,000 BTU window until will really cool a room only about 10x10 or so. Maye 10x15 , but not with high ceilings. Base your figures on that.

Again, Consumer Reports, while I deplore some of their testing techniques and philosophies, does a good job on appliances and such.......as the current ratings are put with A/C:

5,000 to 5,600 Btu. The Amana Quiet Zone 5M11TA, $330, was excellent, with a respectable EER and handy electronic controls. But it wasn't the best at reducing humidity. The Kenmore 71055, also excellent, is a Best Buy, at $200.

6,000 to 7,100 Btu. The Amana Quiet Zone 7M11TA, $380, and Kenmore Innovative Line 78079, $350, topped this size class. The GE ASM06LC, $240, is a Best Buy.

7,800 to 8,000 Btu. The Panasonic CW-C80YU, $400, leads the pack. The Carrier G Series, $310, is a Best Buy.

9,800 to 12,500 Btu. Look first to the LG M1003L or the Panasonic CW-XC100AU. Both are priced at $450. The Friedrich Quietmaster has the highest EER but also the highest price.

C'DaleRider I think you're the only other person on this board who doesn't think that CR is the end all in ratings, especially when it comes to cars :) Its nice to have company ;)

If you only need around 5,000 BTUs or less then I STRONGLY suggest checking out Sharp air conditioners at CostCo B&M stores, they're efficient, digital readout, lots of options and speeds, can cool down to 62 deg F I think and best of all comes with a remote. Last year mine cost $129 after $30 rebate. It was an awesome little unit just don't try and cool an area larger than 5,000 BTUs it won't work.

i second the suggestion of not trying to force a 5K AC to cool a larger area. I bought a generic AC from walmart 2 years ago for a dorm room-which worked fine. Last year, in my own bedroom in a house, it was just adequate, in a 12x15 room with tall ceilings. In my current efficiency, which is pretty large at about 15x30 or so, its inadequate, and during 80+ degree days, even running two fans its still a bit uncomfortable for me, tho I like to be REALLY chilly just like you.

This is for a not bad sized room. I don't know the exact specs yet. What is a central base unit? I was thinking of getting a wall unit.
