I've noticed lately that it seems like unreal tech games seem to be orientated for speed, while Source engine games seem to be more detailed but also suffer from the infamous stutter, even on modern systems. Newer versions seem to have solved the problem in Source at least, but still. So, who makes the best 3d engine?

When was this poll made...2003? The best engines these days seem to be made in Europe. Dice, Crytech, Metro guys, Hard Reset guys, etc.

fast and detailed. Flexible.

The best fast and detailed engine for a FPS isn't the best fast and detailed engine for a RPG isn't the best fast and detailed engine for a RTS isn't the best fast and detailed engine for a MMO isn't the best fast and detailed engine for a flight sim.

It's like asking "what's the best vehicle?" and lumping planes, trains, ships and automobiles all in together....

Unreal is quite versatile, not sure if it's the "best" though. What it has going for it is a large base of talent familiar with it and very good Tools for building a game around.

CryEngine 3

Although CryEngine2 seems to have better physics....the best physics I think I've seen in any engine.

Frostbite 2 seems to be great with lighting and animation - and those long distance views look fantastic.

Hmmmm...and neither was on the poll.

If we're talking about fast and flexible, the winner is probably iD. Just look at Modern Warfare 3- 60fps

er, you've actually kind of hit the nail on the head. Before my recent re-interest in gaming the last time I really played a computer FPS was Half Life 2 back in 2004/2005.

Valve and their Source engine.

I don't particularly like how Source-based games look like compared to today's standards (as far as graphics are concerned) with the exception perhaps of Episode Two and TF2 (Portal 2 doesn't look bad either), but what makes Source superb is its scalability and its stability. I would totally exchange Skyrim's "Creation Engine" for it to be ran on Source just to make sure I don't get a single CTD. Additionally, the facial expressions and animations on Source have only been surpassed by L.A. Noire to this day. And heck character models can look awesome on Source as well (see Cinematic Mod for great character models and textures).

I just think that Source has been and still is the engine that trumps all competition to be honest. I do also like CryEngine but I'd like to see it used in other game types, from other developers. I'd like to see how a real sandbox-style game would end up like under CryEngine (bigger landscapes, less loading, more assets on-screen, great physics, etc.). I would probably shit some bricks if Fallout 4 was made on CryEngine.

So much of what makes people consider a game engine awesome is just the art direction at whatever given studio is using it.

Although I will say that Frostbite 2 is pretty impressive on the visuals it can put at and still get really great performance.

Poll missing lots of engines! The Red engine (TW2) seems solid, though I think Frostbite 2 is the best (and seems very flexible as it's being adopted by racing games, RTS games, RPG, and FPS.)

CryEngine3 is a close 2nd.
