Who makes good networking equipment

All I own is Linksys, and it's the only brand I've ever owned... I just had my 4th piece of equpiment from them die. First it was a gigabit switch, then a wireless router, now a vpn router.

I'd like a do-it-all router with built in wifi and gigabit with at least 8 ports, but I don't think that's gonna happen, so what is a good brand to pickup a wireless router and gigabit switch from. (Preferrably the router has static DHCP.)

Thanks for any help.

My first home router, back in '99, was a Linksys. It would randomly give me 90% pl until i rebooted it. I tried everything: FW, new power adapter, different plug on the wall...eventually I went to Dlink and haven't gone back. *knock on wood* no problems yet! currently using Dlink DI-524, w/ wireless disabled 🙂

I like Linksys stuff... Cisco bought them out many years ago, and it's their low end brand. I suppose you can buy the real Cisco branded stuff, but expect to pay 5-10x the price. 3com is another good, but expensive brand.

Linksys with openwrt is still one of the best products out there. I've owned many switches and routers, and none of them have ever died. There's no moving parts in them, so what's dying on you? Sounds like you need your equipment on a good UPS or something. The thing i hate about Linksys is the shape of the stuff. You can't wall mount them.

Nothing wrong with Linksys, but lately, I prefer Netgear. And, Buffalo is also high on my food chain.

You want the best, buy genuine Cisco equipment .. it will cost more, but you can
find good deals on used equipment

Model often matters more than brand.

D-Link DGL-4300 for router and D-Link DGS-1008D for switch would be my suggestion unless you really want jumbo frame support. The switch (from rev C3 on) supports jumbo frames, but doesn't perform as well with them enabled. A Netgear GS108 switch should be fine for jumbo frame performance.

Linksys makes jumbo-capables routers and switches, but I haven't tried them. Someone said that the D-Link DIR-655 supports jumbo frames too, but I haven't verified it, nor would I recommend a current-gen draft-n product.

i have a 3com router that replaced both my linksys and dlink router. it is a very good router. i had only have to reset the router once becuase of an unknown problem. but since then it has no problems

Hmmm? Linksys is now genuine Cicso equipment.

I have had poor luck with microsoft networking equiptment. I'm not sure if is still available retail, but it is a real pain and the support is absolutely awful.
