I use presently HP (USB) and Epson (SCSI) and my students use UMAX (SCSI) but I never used a firewire version.

I know versions that are USB/Firewire, but why Firewire? What are you using it for? The prices are quite high for Firewire versions, so your input would be helpful.

Epsom gets great reviews all the time and the latest from Consumer Reports put them on tops. Go EPSON and get a 1394 EPSON printer to match.

SCSI printers when out of fashion a while ago, do they even still make SCSI scanners?

SCSI Scanners are still available from Epson and UMAX. They are for professional work. Check their website to verify that fact. I use a wide format Epson scanner which still give me excellent results.

I have a computer that only has USB 1.1 ports and a couple of Firewire 400 ports. Firewire 400 > USB 1.1 :)

That astounds me! I've never had an Eposn product last a year.

Vincent Oliver at photo-i-co.uk has a number of reviews. He seems to like the new Epson V700 best so far.

http://www.photo-i.co.uk/Reviews/interactive/Epson%20V700/page_18.htm

If you're scanning text, or print images, these could be overkill.

If you're scanning film, a dedicated film scanner could still be better, but a decent flatbed scanner can be cheaper and give you a lot of utility. If you're scanning MF or larger film, then price of dedicated film scanners goes up quite a lot, again making the flatbed scanners a good choice.

The Epson and Umax scanners come with a SCSI pci card. You just insert it into any pci slot and plug in the SCSI cable to scanner. If you done it before, you know what I mean.

I've used my wide-format scanner & printer for the past 5 years with no problems. I have a Epson Color 400 USB Printer for longer than that.

If you are doing specific work, these wide-format scanners are highend, but a HP Scanjet is OK for a lot of work, if lettersize or less is your milieu. I use a USB HP Scanjet 6300C for lot of misc work. It has a ADF for document copying so its very helpful.

If you are doing bulk document scanning Panasonic might be the way to go. They make scanners with document feeders and can scan streight to PDF.

There are lesser models at lower prices. Its your choice.

I'm looking for like a top prosumer model, something that has excellent quality and will last me a long time but that doesn't cost $3,000. Probably $1,500 is my cap on it.

Ditto this, I always see Epson's break down.
