a friend of mine read a few months ago that HP(he thought) was working on an $800 dvd-r(not dvd-ram) burner... I cant find it anywhere. Is it made? Does another company make it? I dont want a $5000 dvd-r burner from pioneer!

I don't think dvd-r's are going to be available wide-spread for a while. DVD-ram is about as good as it's gonna get for now.

If you really want a DVD-R drive, then the Pioneer at $5000 is the cheapest by far. Don't forget to add the cost of media at about $50 for a write once 4.7 GB disc. If you want to master DVDs then this is the only practical solution. Given the price, this is also the only practical use.

You could go for DVD-RAM which is a different format completely (2.5 GB cartridges rather than discs) and not playable on DVD video players. These cost about $500, with cartridges about $40 each.

One time investment of at least $500 for the drive. Then:
Just think, you can rent DVDs for $3, then copy them to blank DVD-R media that costs at least $30.

<Edit>

Wait a sec. DVDs only cost like $15. You would be losing money...;)

DVD-R is a one time writing (WORM) device. it is really being pushed as a professional video recording medium because it is designed to be able to be read by players. VERY EXPENSIVE.

DVD-RAM is what you are thinking. the upcoming DVD-RAM 2.0 drives are 4.7 GB per side. and can R\W 2.6 GB per side discs. DVD-RAM 1.0 drives which have been out for a while cannot use the 4.7 GB discs at all.

TheyCallMeSak, what you mention is DVD-RAM, not DVD-R. DVD-R writers are thousand dollar machines. i do not know the cost of the media.

DVD-RAM is much cheaper, and who said anything about pirating. Think about making your own videos, or backup for your computer. it's around $50 for a double sided 4.7 per side disc. Now that's around $100 for 18.8 GB set which is along the lines of a HDD a few months ago (or now, depending). For a rewritable REMOVABLE medium, it's cheap MB\$$.

There is a quick artivle on Forbes.com by John C. Dvorak about the many standards of recordable DVD. I found it rather informative just based on the description of the technologies. I don't have the link in front of me, but I don't think there was any real bias worth noting.

I'll post the link when I get back to NoVA tomorrow. If I forget PM or e-mail me.
