Who makes a good sports coat / suit?

Interviewing for some sales positions and figured that, if that's my career, I'm going to need something better than my $99 JC Penney special. Assuming I'm realistic about my place in life (meaning I'm not buying a $5,000 italian banger, I'm 34 and not Puff Daddy), what's some brands worth looking for? Realistically, I'm fine if my first salesman suit /jacket is 2nd hand, let's say $200 used as a max?

Just go to a big box suit maker and have one made. Men's Whorehouse would be just fine.

Brands only mean so much when it comes to Jackets, particularly if you get them tailored. For a $200 budget I'd just go to Macy's and pick up the best looking thing they had available for $200.

If you are doing sales you are going to need a few suits. If you only need one I would splurge on the budget and spend 500 on dragon inside or indochino. Get a custom suit. For 200 dollars you are going to bottom barrel suits. Especially if you don't catch it on sale.

Or check goodwill. You never know what you will come across. I live in a wealthy area and people donate some high end stuff there.

Whatever you do, get it tailored to fit you.
I buy on the cheaper end then pay whatever it takes to get it to drape well on me. Generally $150-$200 and then $40-$80 on tailoring.
But I don't have to wear suits very often.

Men's Warehouse is the last place you should go to buy a suit.

Decent places are the discount versions of high-end places like Saks off Fifth, Nordstrom Rack, etc... You can also do eBay if you know how to avoid fakes/knockoffs.

You would do a whole lot better off putting a good amount of money into ONE suit than buying 5 shitty suits. My brand of choice would be Ermenegildo Zegna. Also, oldsmoboat is correct - having them properly tailored after you buy them is ESSENTIAL. Without it, you could be in a million dollar suit and still look retarded.

Depends what you consider "fine". If you're going to spend more than $99, I'd spend about $500 and take at a good-but-value-oriented suit maker like Suit Supply. I'd take a look at their Blue Line which are all priced at $400.

If that's too rich, I'd go with a J. Crew suit. The problem with the other big box stores are that there are subtleties to suit fashion, and if you don't pick a brand carefully you end up looking like you just stepped out of the 90s (big, boxy suits with big lapels). The current style is to have smaller lapels and fairly short jackets.

Lastly, once you have a suit - even if it's a $2000 one - take it to a tailor and get it fitted. You could really probably take a $99 suit and make it look many times that amount by having it tailored to look good on you. It's less expensive than you think - maybe $50 for your usual tucks and expansions.

Burlington Coat factory, they usually have Kenneth Cole suits for a good price. I got mine for about 1/2 of what it would have cost me at a normal store. Some locations have a much better suit section then others.

Sorry for abandoning the thread! I picked up a georgio armani suit used on ebay for less than $200, enough for a thorough dry cleaning and alterations. I know how sketchy used is, it just looked fantastic and the seller had 500,000 positive reviews.

You're right that I'll need a few - anyone know how those "send your measurements and we'll send you a custom suits for cheap' sites work out? Any feedback?

For my everyday work suits I think I'll check clearances as recommended

I get that advice totally, but the last time I got my suit tailored (ok, it was more extreme than nicks and tucks - I lost 30+ pounds) it came out to $175! That's more than the modest (ralph lauren, on sale at macys) suit cost! I'll shop around more as that time was a rush, but everything in NYC is stupid expensive.

Try to get a jacket that is fully canvased. A good jacket keeps it form with a decent lining. Cheap ones use big shoulder pads to hold up the suit and keep it's structure, and that is a look you don't want. Find a good tailor too to properly fit everything.
Buy a shirt smartly as well, you want to "show linen" at your wrist, and have your collar keep it's structure with the jacket on.

YMMV, but I Stanford/Penny's shirts sometimes works rather well for fit.

J.Crew, BR and Suit Supply are a good place to go. Mens Warehouse is okay, if you know what to buy. If you don't know, their advice usually sucks.
I would go navy over black for a first jacket, but that is my opinion. Navy jackets matches anything.
I would look at craigslists as well...I found some decent jackets there for 200 or less. There were very expensive ones like Hugo Boss and the like. I just couldn't find any my style.
