The Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 gets the nod from Storagereview as the best 7200 rpm drive. They did have problems in the past, but they seem to have finally fixed them. The Raptor is the fastest and only 10k rpm SATA drive, however.

You really can't go wrong with a Maxtor, Seagate, Western Digital or Hitachi.

You won't notice a speed difference so I would buy whatever has 8MB cache, 3 year warranty and is the cheapest.

All good advice, unless you have a spare $300 for that Raptor ;)

Hey, the 36GB drive is only $115 now... what a deal! Even cheaper if you find someone selling theirs (5 year warranties!)

Yes, but it's still the old design, noisier and a with continuous high-pitched whine (both supposedly fixed in the 74GB).

My Western Digital 120GB SATA had a noticeable slower speed than my Maxtors do. I would probably go Hitachi or Maxtor, then Seagate, then WD in order of preference

WD360GD is a nice drive. Seriously, just about any SATA drive will be speedy enough for normal uses.

Mine whines, but it's a small price to pay for the blistering speed. :) I'm waiting for the fdb motored 36GB models.

why do you want SATA so bad? the biggest advantage is the 10k drives (all raptors at this point)

no big differnces between SATA ans PATA @ 7200

If you want performance just make sure you get a drive with 8 mb cache,
if thats not fast enough slap 2 together in RAID 0 for some speed that wont cost you an arm-and-a-leg.
(just buy a RAID card and 2 identical hard drives)
but if you got money to blow, go with a raptor(it's probly gonna have less space than RAID though :) )

(people will mention a big differfernce is speeds/sounds of one drive to another, but for the most part all the major brands are the same (within spec, IE 7200rpm+8mb cache) , the only real differnces are going to be seen in the bearing types) most people just find a brand they are comfortable with and stick with it.

personally i like WD, but I know that seagate and hitachi are probly just as good.

just make sure you check out the hot deals forum, they always have a hard drive thread with the current deals going. (search for the user "albrandwood" she has some great deal comparison threads)
Edit: added Linky to Ashley's Killer HDD Thread

I have a maxtor 80gig SATA and I'll be the first to say that its just as dog slow as my ATA66 drives. SATA is a waste of money end of story.

If you're getting a 7200RPM drive, you wouldn't be getting a SATA drive for speed. I'd get it soley for the thin cabling and it's not much more expensive, only buy a few bucks. Sometimes the price is the same.

Asides from the interface, the current 7200RPM drives whether it be PATA or SATA are the same. That's if they're the same make/model of course.

a 36gb Raptor (10k rpm 8mb) is a huge improvement over a WD800jb SE (7200rpm 8mb)

the WD800jb whined like a mofo, but never hammered.
the Raptor doesnt whine, but does hammer when under heavy use.
the Raptor also runs cooler then the WD SE.

it was a worthy upgrade for me, im very happy with it :D

One person's opinion and experience does not truly make it so.

I have 2 80GB maxtor sata's in a RAID 0 and I have an average read speed of 85MB/sec I don't know about you but that's hardly dog slow.
