I have a sblive. and i do quite a lot of music listening and game playing both with my pc speakers(microworks) and headphones. i want to be able to connect my computer to the NAD int amp i have so i can listen to my mp3s on my home system and get better qualities. now i have the ff options
1) a stereo-link device, which has both a headphone output and line outs to connect to my amp, cost $160
2)a Nomad jukebox or any other hdd player connected using line out
3)a mp3 cd player connected using line out

which one would give me the best sound quality?
please advise

What's wrong with a stereo->rca cord?

[edit] Oh, is the computer a great distance from the stereo system?

does your sblive have a digital output? and if so, does your NAD amp have a digital input?

if none of the above is true for you, then i'd suggest the simple line out from your sblive converted to two rca cables and plug into an aux input on your NAD. is the NAD a reciver or just an amp?

explain this "stereo link device" a little more for me if you don't mind. what exatly does it dO?

The stereo to rca cord does sound like the most ideal option if your receiver can accept it. They are cheap and can be found at any radioshack.

hi there
sound quality is the most imp factor here and i fear that using extension cables from my crappy sblive lineout would reduce the sound quality.
the stereolink is a product that takes audio out from ur usb port and have line outs to connect to ur amps. their website is stereolink.com

You want to listen to mp3's and you are worried about CABLES degrading the sound???? Unless you have to use cables longer than about 25 feet you shouldn't have any problems at all using an RCA patch cable from the soundcard line out to a line in on the NAD.

well not if u are using 256kbps+. i am not asking for audiophile quality. just something acceptable to my ears. and from what i know long extended RCA cables tend to degrade bass and midrange, also the fact that sblive has hisses along with other signals that might be picked up. currently i am looking at the usb solution as that seems pretty good. but i am open to suggestions

Basara, unfortunately SB Live isn't really audiophile quality when it comes to sound/music reproduction. I would imagine getting a Nomad or some other external player would be better sonically, but also more expensive. In comparison, you could get a digital cable(S/PDIF) and connect your NAD amp to your SB Live! if your amp has a digital in, or a normal stereo RCA cable if it doesn't, for a few bucks. I suggest you try this first, and see if the result is acceptable. If it works, you'd have save a few hundred bucks. If not, you could go with your other options, and you'd only have wasted a few bucks anyway.

<< long extended RCA cables tend to degrade bass and midrange >>

That's utter nonsense. The hiss problem won't be made better or worse by using RCA cables. The only thing a long RCA cable might pick up is some hum if it is not properly routed or if there is a ground loop between the differnt pieces of equipment. It will cost you what - $10 to try RCA cables? And if you aren't happy you can take them back to the store. Tell us how long the cables would have to be, then maybe we can help you a little better.

Im using a Aiwa Shelf system for my computers surround sound. I have an Aureal based card and also run a 25ft rca cord into my living room where my Monster Pioneer system resides. I couldn't ask for sweeter sound. If you use a good rca patch cable your not going to have any loss. Give it a try save some money and your see! 😉

probably isnt going to help basara, but the best way to do this if you have the right equipement is to use optical toslink cables. if you have the sb plat. 5.1 with line drive and the amp has optical in, then that would be the way you want to do it
