I was thinking of getting a used crotch rocket to play with, yet another thing to satisfy my thirst for speed.. I know practically nothing about them though.. anyone have any suggestions? how much would an older used one run me? how much would maintenance be on such a machine? what kind of times and speeds would I be looking at?

what about insurance, I'm 19 btw.. and I have to have a special license for one, right? what all is involved in getting one of those?
thanks

ok insurance will KILL YOU

and all you have to do to get a license is go to the DMV and take a test similar to getting your drivers license except you are on a motorcycle :)

<< I wouldnt reccommend a japanese crotch rocket if your never ridden a bike before. >>

why is that? you have to learn sometime.. why buy a crappy bike just to learn on?

First take teh MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) course. Pass teh Basic course .. get your licence. One thing nice the MSF will give you a discount if you show that to the insurance company.

Now.. As for the bike, japanese bikes are nice.
However this is where I hang out, post your motorcycle stuff here.
Motorcycle Boards

I wouldnt get a Crotch rocket that can do 0-60 in 4sec.. but something you can control.
cause your on 2 wheels and you can lose balence quickly unless you are used to riding bicycles.. for a long time

I'm not sure what insurance would be for you at 19, but when I got my bike (Buell Cyclone M2) I was 24, and through Allstate my insurance was $55.00 a month, and will go down more when I get more experience (and a license, I only have a permit now). When I turned 25 it went down to $51.00 a month. If you can get Allstate, they have great rates for motorcycle riders. My dad switched to Allstate from Farmers when I got my Allstate insurance, and his insurance went down $20 a month.

Actually, insurance on motorcycles is dirt cheap because the potential to do damage to others is so small.

The reason I said that is because they are so fast, a beginner should definately learn on one.

I honestly think that if you are smart, you can learn on any bike. When I got my bike, I had never ridden a motorcyle on the street, and my bike is plenty fast with a ton of horsepower and torque. But, I'm not a showoff, I don't try to go 100mph on the street, and I know my limits. I ride careful, and I don't try to ride above my head. But, if you are the type than wants to showoff and try to be Mr Racer on the street, then a fast sportbike is NOT the bike you want to learn on.
