Who knows mower tires?

My ten year old riding mower needs new rubbers. Old ones are stamped 20 x 8 x 8. I can't find those in anything other than turfs (slicks) which I don't want again. I need something with some bite. All of the knobbies or other ATV type treads show 20 x 9.5 x 8 or 20 x 10 x 8 or similar.

What sizes are interchangeable?

Is the second 8 the one that matters ... the wheel size?

I think the second number is width and the third is tire diameter.

The three-number lawn tractor tires numbering system works a bit differently. 15×6.00-6 is a common size. The first number before the “x” indicates the tire’s diameter when inflated and not under load. The middle number between the “x” and the “-,” indicates the tire’s width. The final number indicates the width of the rim. Note that the last number is width, not diameter of the rim. This is always the case with three-number sizing for lawn tractor tires and other garden equipment tires.

I put some ATV tires on my larger cub cadet and it was fantastic compared to the turf treads. looks like less selection in your size. Here is an option. bar lugs are also good but could tear up the grass a bit if they are spaced too far apart. check ebay, its where I have gotten odd sizes of tires in the past.

if you have the clearance a 20-10-8 should work I think, and there seem to be a few more choices in that size.


@pcgeek11 the links clearly state the last number is wheel dia, not width.
not sure where you came up with that. with width of the wheel is not as important, as you can usually flex the sidewalls a bit for different tire and wheel width combinations.

I'm thinking the 20 x 9.5s would work. I see pairs of these for $130 or so shipped

I have chains on my 20 x 8s and there is still enough clearance, so I can't see 9.5s being wider than the 8s with chains.

i had chains as well, and never used them after i got a tread like this. i was able to use my plow to spread gravel on my driveway with these. my CC was an 1995 model of their large "garden tractor" weighing around 900 lbs.

sold that and upgraded to a large 50 hp tractor/loader and a cheap zero turn for the current property though.
