Who knows lots about the DishNetwork DVR-942?

Okay long backstory short, my folks got a free DVR-942 from DishNetwork. The complication is that they don't subscribe to Dish, they subscribe to DirecTV. I was hoping there was some way to use the built-in HD Tuner since their HDTV has none. Unfortunately it won't get anywhere past the "connecting to satellite" screen. I'm wondering if there's any way to get it past that screen without having the folks subscribe to Dish. Anybody know whether or not that's possible?
